It should also be mentioned that some players don't scroll down to see the Game Chat during play, so expecting any response from them is silly. Of course a freemium has plenty of time to chat, but what is the entertainment value of playing 50 or more games simultaneously?

Forget the lack of chat, I'm thinking that playing 50+ games doesn't leave much time for interacting anywhere.

I do 50+ games, with some strain because they are not easy games, but 50 is not...too much..
it all depends on settings and type. Freestyle or speed 50+, wow, mindblowing.
seq, no spoils 8 player standard games? 50+ yes can do. boring, but doable

Hmm, so if someone offers a truce to you in gamechat you miss it? I find this hard to believe.
If you are simply anti-social why not just fess up?

I can't imagine doing 50+ games. but I guess in sequential 8 player games they move pretty slow, so I can see that, and plus CC automatically moves the "your turn" games to the top, so that's handy. I couldn't imagine scrolling through 50+ games trying to find out which ones you can play your turn.
I usually just say the same old thing in game chat, and then if the other person doesn't respond, I'll just be quiet.
Anyone know some good conversation starters for game chat? I usually use "Ever played this map before?" but what are some others?

I keep asking for a pony in game chat, but no one ever gives me one. That's why I tag everyone as "rude".

Yeah, most good players might make a comment about the strongest player, but expect most people to see it themselves.

Will if there is any kind of alliance going on, you wouldn't want to miss it. Has nothing to do with whether or not a good player would make one. Everyone you play with is good? Irrelevant response which didn't even answer my question.

I think what owen is referring to is the type of game many higher rank players play.

Team games- self explanatory
Large escalating games- proper strategy means that nobody should feel the need to make alliances
1v1- also self explanatory

Where I think alliances happen most are probably flat rate games that have gone past where rainbow sets make a significant difference or no spoils game possibly. I'm assuming these are no fog games because fog should make information much harder to find (unless people start posting positions in game chat). This constrains the game type enough that high rank players tend to not play them enough that alliances are exceedingly rare in the games they would participate in.

Ok aside from any hair-splitting, my question was whether or not players actually did not read any chat or that they just didn't want to respond. If the former is the reality for most players then I rest my case. The whole alliances thing was just an example, not meant to be scrutinized under the microscope. The reason I am at all doubtful about the "too many games" explanation is that I don't see a real difference between my freemium games and mems games as far as the chat thing goes. Also, I have been in a good deal of games where the person will take the time to write something in chat but not to reply to chat. I am sure that some players are legitimately too busy to check chat but I don't think this is across the boards. Some are just "dicks" and it would be refreshing for someone to admit it lol.

Well, yes, I'm sure people glance at chat. But besides the standard sort of gl, I don't see much chat besides an occasional post about someone getting strong. In fact, most of the times when I'm talking about something not game related, it's usually with forum posters who happen to be in the same tournament/random game invite. I think the possibility of two complete strangers talking a lot is much rarer, but it's not through any malicious intent IMHO.

I still can't help thinking of the one about the guy coming into a room to play chess, taking his turn without saying a word and then leaving. Or imagine you are waiting on a bench for the bus next to a stranger for a few days in a row and never even looking at them. I guess I like to be reminded of the fact that I am playing against human beings who have personalities and not a lot of dice crunching robots :P.
Hmm, you know what would make it really awkward? If you were required to have a little live video of yourself when you turned...
Think people would start conversing out of shame or would they just change sites?
Too...much...like....a....real....person...

Edit:

Ok, I have been really paying attention to my games since this thread was started. I have decided that really, honestly, all I ask is for is a greeting and a farewell. If I were to play any game with a stranger it is only human and natural to at least greet each other and then you can get on with business. At least at this point I can rest assured that we are both of the same species. After this I can enjoy and respect the silence that is shared by two players battling for victory. Once the victor is established, a farewell is in order between gentleman/gentlewomen for good sport and mutual respect. If I got this out of every game I would be satisfied.

Sincerely,
Funky

For the most part, I try to have a hello and a goodbye, with a usual nod towards the end of the game to whoever seems to be wrapping it up. Sometimes I forget though, but I try, I try.

I think to sum up, most players (but not all) do read chat most of the time (but not all the time.)

When I posted earlier that I am sometimes just in too much of a hurry to look at chat, that didn't mean "all the time." Certainly sometime I do chat and sometimes there are even rewarding full-scale conversations.

Nothing that can be said will cover every possibility. Some people talk some of the time, but nobody talks all the time.

I think the main factors are gameload and game type. A player with 50+ active games generally doesn't waste time in chat, so it's not a deliberate snub it's simply he/she is too busy. Also in any version of singles there are some players who simply don't scroll down to chat as they are playing alone. Write publicly in chat in any team game and 95% of the time you'll prompt a response because the opposition are of course using chat for team talk (and the errant 5% are possibly on MSN for their dialogue, who knows). That's my take on it anyway.

I'm in general agreement with this I think. Though I have come across some users with small gameloads who are not talkative players (sometimes I am one of them too). But I think there is often indeed a correlation between # of games and talkativeness in game chat (at least, with non-friend/clanmate games).
