ethics question for fog

Postby Super Nova on Thu Apr 14, 2011 10:15 am

Would it be considered ethical in fog to ask another player what is on a territory behind them so that neither player has to lose troops when I go and try to figure it out otherwise?

Sharing your view of the fog is a big "no-no" for most people. You can ask, and they can decide whether or not to tell you - it's not against the rules. But many players, including me, would consider it unethical, and it will probably get you both added to a few foe lists.

Edit: if you do ask, make sure to do it in game chat. Asking via PM or wall is considered secret diplomacy, and is against the rules.

No, it's certainly not unethical. However, whether you get an accurate answer or not is another question. You see, if I were the player you are asking, the accuracy of my answer would depend almost entirely on what I wanted you to do and how giving you accurate/inaccurate information would benefit me.

No for me. Kinda annoying that your plans any your weak points are revealed.

I'd agree with drunkmonkey - if I was in that game and you asked me or another player, you'd be joining my foe list and be rated accordingly. I think you'll find for most people it is along similar lines to breaking an alliance - most people will see it as unethical and wont play with you again, some people will take advantage by lying, and a very small minority will answer honestly - probably only if it is in their best interests or they are very naive. Just remember, if it is a multiplayer game your opponents are likely to view this as collaboration and may work together against you as a result.

I have found when this sort of thing happens in a fog game things get ugly fast and like jer said, you will probably end up getting ganged on anyways. I suppose you can say what you want in chat but it sort of spoils the fun a little. Depends on why you play fog I guess, to get an advantage by knowing the map or to have more fun through the element of surprise. While we are on the subject, what IS the point of fog if all the locations can become public information? This is exactly the reason why I only play 1v1 or 2v2 fog games.

Unethical? I don't know, but it never hurts to ask right?!
