What's Your favorite Setting and Why?

Postby shieldgenerator7 on Wed Mar 16, 2011 8:22 am

hey, I wanted to hear what your favorite settings are (not maps). Why are they your favorite settings?
here's mine:
Standard: because terminator's not as fun, and assassin's too short, and I like team games, but I'm better at single player
Freestyle: I get to take my turn everyday
Automatic: I like my troops already on the board
Escalating: I like getting massive troop deployments
Unlimited: It's frustrating when there's limits to reinforcement
Sunny: FOW is not my thing
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to defeat all evil. -Ephesians 6 KJV

My favourite settings are entirely based on the map I play, but you didn't want to hear that, right?

Standard, Terminator & Doubles. Mainly because I can't be arsed to learn assassin, trips & quads properly.

Sequential. Because freestyle is more about who is fastest than strategy. I like to take my turns with no rush and think things through, not having to sit near the computer 24/7 waiting for my turns...

Automatic & Manual are both ok.

Escalating for standard & terminator games. It's so exhilarating to sweep the board. Wishing that your dice come through, getting 9 cards in hand and cashing 3 sets at once, watching how noobs try to hold bonus areas and running over them with huge cashes...

No spoils for dubs. Cards are mostly just in the way when you play dubs.

Chained. One reinforcement only, you have to actually think where you deploy and where you move, when you can't shuffle your troops willy nilly around the board.

No fog. Mainly because I'm lazy and don't like doing tons of detective work to figure out where my enemy is.

Large, complex map, sequential, automatic, no cards, chained forts, fog with eight players. I like my games overly complex with no pesky cards to get in the way. Some call these "build" games.

Terminator without question.
Freestyle sucks.
Automatic seems to make for much more enjoyable games that last longer and aren't quite as dice-dependent.
No Spoils is my preference.
I enjoy chained reinforcements...make that difficult decision about which fort to make.
Fog of War makes all games more enjoyable.

  • Definitely 1vs1 on a mid-sized maps, though I am getting into Quads.
  • Escalating mostly, though I have been enjoying no spoils for Quads.
  • Standard, 24 hours, Adjacent, no fog of war, all musts usually.

I like most, less terminator and assassin
also not settings that easy lead to stale: multiplayer flat rate, no spoil

For team games I prefer no cards

For singles games I prefer escalating, anything else I find discusting.

Fog is ok for team games, yet awful for singles games.

Chained forts are good for everything. Adjacent is annoying only because I forget its there, especially for team games. Unlimited is interesting, and very different for team games. For singles games unlimited just gets the forting out of the way in one turn, instead of taking 3 or 4 turns.

Manual is pretty annoying. Nuclear is basically no cards, with the occasional stupid surprise.

So that's it. Here' is a summary of all that.

Standard (or terminator), auto, seq, esc, chained, sunny.

Team game, auto, seq, no spoils, chained, sunny or fog.

I play most other stuff, but I like these two (3 really) options the best.

Terminator and Standard mostly. Terminator must be foggy. Standard can be either sunny or foggy. Pretty much the same as greekdog. No cards, sometimes flat rate. Chained, because I always forget whenever I'm playing adjacent, and then mess up while deploying. Don't like unlimited forts. Hate hate hate escalating. Automatic, don't really like manual deploy. Not much of a team player, only like playing teams with a buddy of mine, but he hasn't been on in a while.

And never freestyle.

1v1/Doubles/Triples/Assassin
Sequential - freestyle is mostly about speed
Automatic - manual gives a lot of advantage to the player that starts
Escalating/no spoils - I like both (escalating forces you to think more, but no spoils has less luck involved)
Chained - unlimited gives a lot of advantage to the player that starts and I'm not used to adjacent
Foggy - forces you to think more

I prefer either 4-6 player FFAs or 2v2v2s. I haven't played much quads or trips to have an opinion on those.
Automatic: makes you have to work with what you get.
Sequential: Makes everything fair IMO.
Flat Rate: Being a more conservative player, I like flat rate, but I'm starting to like some aspects of escalating.
Chained: I like it because you have to make your troop movement count. Adjacent feels too limiting.
Sunny: I hate fog.

Adjacent Reinforcements and Foggy, everything else is usually random.
Reason is because I find both settings make the game harder.

IMO, the hardest game would probably be something along the lines of this:

Speed Game
Hive
8 players
Assassin
Automatic
Freestyle
Escalating
Adjacent
Foggy
