I've often seen people offer tourney prizes for 3- or 6 months premium membership. Is it possible to purchase a shorter term membership?

You can only buy a full year. The tourny prizes are also a year, but spread over multiple people.

Those prices that are split were not purchased by a member. They were provided by the site as a thank-you contribution for the organizer putting up their own money when running a tournament. All purchased prizes are 1 year in length.

A membership here is cheaper than most, even if you don't use it the full year.
