How do I make suggestions and offer opinions?

Postby PapaGeek on Thu Dec 23, 2010 4:08 am

I’m either totally lost on how to “discuss” things in these forums, especially the suggestion forum, or I’m the rudest SOB ever to play this game.

I’ve only been playing here less than a month, but I’ve already learned that one of the biggest “problems” with the games is the time delay between moves. Some games move well and you get to make a play or two per day. Others take multiple days between moves. The worst game I was in had two newbies that signed up and then didn’t play. It took six days of waiting for them before the rest of us could play the game at a reasonable pace.

So, I made a couple of suggestion and added a comment to another suggestion that literally took my concerns in the opposite direction:

Vacation Mode: My first thought was to set up some way for a person to let the system know they would not be able to make plays for a few days so the system could make the plays for them and not cause others to wait the full 24 hours each time.

This suggestion went nowhere.

Quick (12 hours): My next idea was to add a third option the Round Length selection for a 12 hour game.

I didn’t realize I was so rude and offensive until I was told in no uncertain terms, ”Again people, we can't always say "Well, if you don't like it, don't pick it". Then EVERYBODY will use it as an excuse to get some new feature submitted.”

Major Holidays: This was my biggest act of rudeness. I made an assumption as to the op’s intention. The original suggestion was to increase the Round Length to 48 hours during holiday seasons. After reading some of the other responses I thought this was all about avoiding getting kicked out of games after 3 missed turns, so I had the audacity to restate my holiday mode idea as an alternative.

Again, I was put in my place with the following remark, “please keep on topic with the suggestion. Don't make this suggestion about your suggestion.”

Why am I being scolded whenever I try to suggest something to speed the games up? Am I totally out of touch? Is the idea of the games to make them go as slow as possible?

So, since this is an open forum, and I sure hope it is, I’m asking the rest of you to tell me where I’m supposed to make suggestion about making the games obviously far worst by making them go a little faster. Is it really that rude to be opposed to slowing them down further?

Complaining wont lead you anywhere even if you were scolded so you'll have to roll with the punches and try to negotiate if possible on your suggestion. Now I know some mods can be rather hard and cold for their comments but try to think of a better solution if possible.

People have their opinions around here and if you believe your suggestions would be beneficial then defend them. If people use constructive criticism then adjust your suggestion. If a mod scolds you (like the one I know that shall not be named) about not staying on topic you should defend your post and say why it's relevant. If push comes to shove with this said member then you should contact a higher power and state your case. Don't let people walk all over you for your ideas and opinions but if they bring valid points and arguments you should address them in your suggestion on how to solve it.

In simple terms don't let them get to you and state your case against theirs and adjust your suggestion if necessary.

Papa, for what it's worth, I think the idea of a Vacation Mode makes perfect sense. Although the Account Sitting method we have now works well, I didn't have anyone to sit for me when I first started. I'll take a look at your suggestion.

For the second idea, there is such a thing as too many options. If your suggestion is popular enough, it will be implemented, but if you can't drum up enough support for it, it shouldn't be added just because a couple of people would like it to be added.

In the third case, each Suggestion thread needs to be about that one particular suggestion. It's a bit of a thread derailment when you post in someone else's thread, "Hey, let's not go with your idea! Let's use my suggestion instead!"

It would be better to advocate for using a vacation mode as an alternate without mentioning your own thread specifically. Each suggestion thread is for debating the merits and demerits of that particular idea.

you could also not insult all of us by announcing that you have determined what is wrong with this site & how it can be 'fixed' after 1 month of activity here

Also one thing to think about, the site clearly states its for the "casual gamer".
If everyone wanted the games to speed up, it would become....not so casual.

Then it'd move into the realm of all the other games I played, where I HAVE to be on every hour of every day in order to do well (and in this case, not miss turns).

The way people generally get around slower games, is buying premium and signing up for more games. Then those "slow games" dont become noticable at all, cause you still have lots of others to play.

The site has a few other ways to speed things up already, speed games, freestyle, smaller games or be more selective of the ones you do choose etc.

That being said, anything where "the system" makes plays for you I'd be 100% against. The idea is to play vs other players. If you wanna miss your turns, I'd rather have that then play AI. If I wanted AI, I'd pick up copy of Risk.

Like people say,its sugestion forum, these mean that you need to show-present- defend with arguments, and upgrade yours sugestion,if some other member give you sugestion what will improve yours sugestion.
I have 4-5 sugestion ideas, what i think that its worth to be implemented, but need time to development good helpfull idea, and you need support of comunity.

In my experience when I have offered suggestions that I thought were of some merit with regard to speeding up the game for the "casual" non paying players, the response has been underwhelming. We can't go in the speed games or play more than 4 at a time. If you happen to get stuck with a boatload of no shows (not always noobs) then because there is no opt out function your gaming is seriously compromised.
Being touted as a free site, I believe the administration deliberately (and it isn't wrong, it's salesmanship) steer freemium players towards "buy premium and enjoy the perks sending us your money buys you", and they should maybe not so heavily promote the "free" aspect.
The administrators could also make it clearer for the freemium players that any suggestions we might make will fall on indifferent ears.

The suggestions of speeding up games or adding a resign button have been suggested and rejected countless times. It had nothing to do with a freemium suggesting them.

Don't be too downhearted if people are rude. First post I made here was a suggestion & I was flamed so decided not to bother posting for another six months or so. I've come to like it here though, there's some rudeness, but most folks are reasonable enough.

Could someone write a summary of all these long posts so I don't have to read all this stuff. I'd really like to respond, but all the posts are rather lengthy.

1. If you want to make a suggestion, then you're just yelling in a crowded room and no one is listening (though they pretend to be). "Accepted" suggestions rot in Suggestion Hell while random Suggs like "Nuclear Spoils" and "Skip a turn so I can get around going to one extra window" which have very little support make it through and be inacted.

2. If you want to offer opinions, then you better do it in SIB because GD has become less fun than watching two naked guys do calculus. Then again, you have to ask me for permission to post in my threads because they are of such high value.
