obvious things to watch for and Do.

Ive played a few games now and i thought i would share what i learned. So here are a few things which will help strengthen your game.
( this is largely regarding 1vs1 games but it still applies to 3-4 player games)

1- In your first turn, dont rush for an area, play it slow by focusing on getting a single territory. This prevents you from spreading yourself thinly and allowing the your opponent to attack easy single troop defended points.

2- Fortification is really important. in 1vs1 games, the trick is to fortify *from* points that are protected by neutral barriers.

3- Don't assume that getting a Region bonus is a must do early game. you'll often waste a large amount of troops, killing Neutrals that are actually helping you, by providing barriers etc. remember you also get bonus troops from holding large numbers of territories.

4- if you see a point where your opponent is weaker, take it. the less territories they have the less troops they get remember. its also a bonus, if the thinly spread area you just took is protected by your/others troops, it means they cant retake them.

5- If your opponent is trying to take a region for a troop bonus, don't necessarily attack them back, (i think) you have an advantage in defence so if possible, take your turn as per usual and then fortify from deeper in your lines, this should wear their troops thin and allow you to attack next turn. However, if you don't have any fortification access points, and you want to prevent them from getting the region, place all your troops on a single area and attack the weakest territory your opponent has then reinforce from the other one keeping your troops evenly distributed.

These are my five Tips, Noob to Noob. i have only played a few games but it has worked well for me so far. please feel free to contribute/ give an opinion on them

I hope you have success! ;)

there's not much wrong with the first four points made

but point 5
the attacker always has the advantage, sitting back and defending is a doomed tactic. If someone starts building next to my bonus, I'm going to take that bonus and attack them with it

Actualy in terms of odds on winning on a dice roll the defender is more likely to win. However as a stragety in general defending never works.

If the attacker rolls 3 dice, and the defender rolls 2, the attacker has the advantage.
Therefore, in a 1v1, it is best to use your deployment to attack until, at the very least, you are down to 3 armies.

And I think the OP did very well for a novice.

That isn't a flower. It's an ANUS.

I hope to get rid of my doormans hat using these tips.

Im new to this site, but not to risk itself.
IMO, do whats ever needed to keep from an opponent outnumbering you on your borders.
Of course you have to watch your flanks. Stay away from trying to hold regions with multiple borders until you have the strength
much later in the match. don"t go into small battles with less than a 3-1 superiority. With larger scale battles, 2 to 1 works O.K. I usually don't enter into any battles with less than a 1.75 to 1 ratio.
Start conservatively, plod along attacking countries 1 or 2 at a time. Spreading yourself thin in suicide attacks rarely works out. Do anything you can early in the game
to keep a numerical superiority in your single high priority region. You don't really have the resources to concentrate on more than 1 region at a time anyway.

100 mates, your post is a good start to developing your strategy. Continue to think about your play and refine your thinking.

I wasn't mocking, as i said i agree with the first 4, I just have an issue with #5.

as for some other posts, I'm afraid you will just have to get used to some weighing in with "amusing" comments. it happens all the time.

I'd suggest starting a thread for off topic, unfunny comments but it would probably get screwed up by someone posting something that was actually funny.

I agree with macbone, a good start, keep going and enjoy =D>

Ok, I've played many-a-1v1 games and here is the strategy I've learned:

1. Get lucky
2. If playing Classic, get Aussie

1) Never hit neutrals (on most maps)
2) Try to take the smallest bonus, unless it has a neutral in it. There are some, rare times when you'll take a bonus with 1 neutral in it. Never 2.
3) Attack as much as possible in order to knock down your opponent's territory count and raise yours.
4) Always fort from a protected area to the frontline when possible

- If you have 4 or more on a tert, it's basically a mandatory attack. It is a very rare situation when you won't want to use a 4-stack... I can't think of one right now.
- 3v1s are acceptable in many situations; they are useful if you want to knock down their deployment count, and on bigger maps, you can try it even if it doesn't knock down
their deployment count. On smaller maps, you may want to hold off on a 3v1 if it doesn't affect their deployment, so you can stack it next round and have better odds.
- 3v2 and 2v1 are reserved for the desperate breaking of significant bonuses

Basically, if you follow these rules and have good judgment about which small bonus(es) to target and when to use a 3v1, you should do fine.

Did I miss anything?

Thinks I watch out for:

I like to steal other players cards, so if I can wipe out a player I do it.
I point out to the other players in game chat if someone is taking the lead and that we should cut them down to size. (I think its up to them to work out if its good for them to take my advice)
I like the advice about getting to the edge - I like having a weak player between me and another stronger player.
I seem to remember someone said you get more aggressive the less players there are. I don't play many 1v1 games though so I'm used to being fairly conservative.

I can think of one instance where you may not want to attack with 4...say on classic map if you have 4 on Bankok and Australia and they hold both territories that connect to Bankok with 3 armies on each....although I can make the case for attacking anyway also.

I can also think of several instances where a 4 stack or even greater should not attack by default.

1) your opponent has a territory with a single between you and his stack. He is praying that you attack so next turn he can attack for serious smack down. This is especially important when reinforcements are adjacent and/or you are playing fog. Don't let them put those units in play!

2) the same principle applies when the territory you're attacking opens you to attack from multiple opponents and/or territories.

3) The third is a lesson I've learned from playing Lux, and that is - I would rather click the end button with a 4 vs 1 border advantage than swing and miss and leave him with a 4 vs 3 to break my bonus.

No fog, no spoils, Lux is the place to be! Come and get some :-$
