Number of points lost on losing?

hi, how are the number of points lost decided when losing a game? I have seen 2nd placed people lose more than first out and generally the points lost doesn't seem to relate to how well you did.

Conquer Club members are initially given a score of 1000. At the end of each game, the winner takes points away from each loser. The points to be awarded is calculated as (loser's score / winner's score) * 20, up to a maximum of 100 points from each opponent.(This is if the setting is standard)

In a terminator game you get points for the players that you eliminate. When players are auto-kicked in a terminator game their troops remain on the map, and you can still get points (and spoils) from them if you eliminate the deadbeat before the game is over (otherwise their points are awarded to the game winner).

So you were likely playing a terminator game with various ranks mixed in. The high rankers loose more points then the low rankers when they get taken out.
