What is the ? for?

I'm in the middle of my first few games. What does the ? mean on regions?

In the notes it says xxxx conqueror ? from yyyy.

I don't know why there are ? marks all over the map.

For the Game Log, it stands for a territory name when you're playing fog of war games. You don't know the territory name because you don't own it.
If you're talking about the ?s on the actual map, it means an opponent's territory that is not adjacent to any of your own territories.

You are playing a Fog of War (FoW) game. In a FoW game, the only territories you can see are territories you can attack. All other territories have question marks on them, to show that you can't see the colour and exact amount of troops on that territory.

In the game log, the territories captured are hidden by question marks, again to ensure that you don't know what you can't see.

my advise. take a screenshot after every turn. ( hit [ctrl] and [ptrint screen] and then paste to a word document. it shows a picture of what you actually can see, so you know where you have been defeated and where you still have eyes
