"Balanced play" explanatory tag - meaning?

Postby Rodion on Sat Aug 07, 2010 9:26 pm

This is something I always wanted to know and still don't.

I understand balance as the middle point between two extremes. What I don't know is which two extremes should be analysed in order to decide someone has a "balanced play".

Options I see:

1 - Agressive/passive - if this is what the tag is about, a balanced player would not attack frequently, but would also refrain from using turtling strategies.
2 - Clever/dumb - if this is what the tag is about, a balanced player would not make the best micro/macro warfare decisions, but at the same time he does not make stupid "class A" mistakes.

There's also the possibility of balanced play referring to a different dichotomy. Anyway, what does is really mean?

Thanks in advance.

it's whatever you want it to mean. I view it as the player who builds smartly and attacks wisely. A balanced player will be your toughest opponent. They see three moves ahead and play accordingly. if a player is too timid they let you linger and you take them out if a player is too aggressive they thin them self out and you take them out

I've always assumed that it is about balance between agressive and defensive play. Someone with balanced play doesn't overextend, but is also agressive enough to win the game.

personally i'd go with shocked439's explanation..
however its ambiguous, so i think you can interpret it both ways. I think consensus however is that its not a bad tag.. right?!
