Map Information

Postby MrBenn on Tue Apr 06, 2010 1:52 pm

There's been discussion for goodness-knows-how-long about adding some sort of map information somewhere to CC.

Assuming that map information was going to be added (I'll save the debate about where for another time/place), what would you most like to know about a map? What information would be most useful? Would information is really not very important at all?

Off the top of my head, I'm guessing that things like starting territories and starting neutral values would be useful, as would any map objectives. What else do you think people should know about each map?

This is pretty good, as what natty mentioned.

I think non-standard gameplay (I.E. do you start with a bunch of region or is conquest) would be helpful for people browsing maps.

This is generally what I'd like to know first, too.

The most important things to me are things that aren't shown in the legend: starting # of terits per player and starting neutral values. Also any coded neutrals (such as those on Poison Rome) or coded starting positions (for maps like Holy Roman Empire, which I have been told has starting positions coded as well as randomly assigned territories).

This is a good starters guide, but like Jake I'd like to know where the starting positions are for some maps.

Yeah, it's a great start - but it doesn't have everything we need.

I thought of something else too - which maps are restricted to noobs. I also would like to suggest this as part of the Foundry process - determine which maps shouldn't be open to new recruits. Like Poison Rome...

Categories. For example if you look up pelo-wars it could say "category 2 map" or "Fuedal style map". Something like that. Also someone mentioned number of territs, that would be nice too.

I'd say divide all to 4 categories: Standard, Conquest, Mixed or Other.

Standard: classic etc.
Conquest: feudal, pelo wars, poland etc.
Mixed: 3rd crusade, mix between starting points & random drop.
Other: maps with a gameplay that don't seem to fit in any other category, such as circus maximus... (ok it has a standard drop, but the gameplay is so unorthodox otherwise that I feel that maps like this require a category of their own)

There are some good ideas emerging...

Chipv's map portal is very useful - is there anything specific in there that you think everybody should know about?

Also, assuming that some sort of map description were available, what sort of thing would you like to see/know?

Some sort of difficulty rating would be helpful to new players... Thank of a new recruit joining the site, they would have no idea which maps were good for beginners, difficulty ratings would help them know which maps to learn the basics on, and which maps to stay away from until their skill increases...

Any more suggestions, or does the above list contain pretty much everything you'd find useful to know?

How about a community complexity rating - from 1 to 5, where 5 is very complex while 1 is simple?

A Community Complexity Rating could definitely be something we look at in the future, but it would not initially be a part of this project, so as to keep it small and manageable I think. :D

But I'd be in favor of a Community Complexity Rating, or something similar to that.

Any other thoughts on the information that you would like to know and review, before getting a game on a map?

How about-

most popular settings, or, optimum settings. -this will help when setting up games.

Top 10 most played maps. -This will also help with setting up games. (games with popular maps and settings, will fill sooner).
