Crossmap Medals

Postby MrBenn on Thu Apr 29, 2010 6:45 pm

I was just reading through some discussion about suggestions for new medals, and got to thinking about the Crossmap Medal... Currently the requirements are:

Image Defeat 5 unique opponents on 20 different maps.
Image Defeat 5 unique opponents on 40 different maps.
Image Defeat 5 unique opponents on 60 different maps.

Given that there are now in excess of 150 maps on the site, do you think there should be any amendments to the Crossmap Achievement? If so, what would you set new limits at? Do you think there are other/better ways of recognising the ability of a player to be successful at a variety of different maps?

This is not a suggestion thread, as I don't have any realistic expectation that there will be any changes in the immediate future; hence "general discussion"

Perhaps a new medal class? Platinum crossmap? But then this would open the door for all the other medals to be given an upgrade...

Changing the requirements for the existing medals may prove problematic - or at least unpopular, as you can expect all those medal hunters to raise hell when they hear they will be losing their medals (although temporarily)...

i think adding a higher medal ie platinum across the board would be cool...although as it has been said this only effects a minimal amount of people on the site...

Image Defeat 5 unique opponents on 20 different maps.
Image Defeat 5 unique opponents on 40 different maps.

keep this the same but add platinum and diamond, I mentioned this over a year ago.

Defeat 5 unique opponents on 100 maps Platinum

Defeat 5 unique opponents on 150 maps Diamond

gives more for players to shoot for over time, always good idea to shoot for goals.

I still think this is a good candidate for a "revolving" or "have to keep earning" award. That is, you get it for earning a crossmap on all maps (or close to it), then to keep it, you have to earn cross map on the new maps within 30 days or so. You would get a permanent ribbon or such, but the trophy (or new award) would have to be earned over and over.

It would be something that even older players can still work to achieve.

New medals are always cool.

But didn't the requirements used to be higher? I could swear that when I first started you needed 100 maps and 500 kills for gold medals. I could be wrong, though.

Depends on lack's plans for the suggested platinum medals.

My thought would be:
5 kills on 20 maps: Bronze
5 kills on 50 maps: Silver
5 kills on 100 maps: Gold

And, if a platinum medal is added:
5 kills on 150 maps: Platinum

This would create more of the escalating scale of other medals.

kinda think it should be based off of percents as the map count will continue to grow... in 2 years we will have the same problem if you dont make it a percent.

I personally don't like the idea of removing medals from people.. but then again it is clear that an update should be made.

Perhaps, the medals should work similar to tournament medals as in, 20 crossmaps is 1 medal, 40 is 2, 60 is 3, 80 is 4, etc. etc. though as long as we would keep that image as it is my favourite looking medal. :)

You are. There were only about 80 maps when the medals were introduced.

I would not advocate removing the medals.. if the totals are changed, then I think people should get to keep old awards, but with some kind of added marker that indicates they won it under the old system. (a circle around the medal, or even just an asterisk beside it that is explained below)

However, what I was proposing was an entirely new award, one that would be known to be "temporary" or "need to re-earn", from the beginning.

Percents were not used in the beginning, I believe, because it would make an extremely difficult ladder for new users to climb.

medals are not suppose to be church diners where you just show up to win.

To me the crossmap medal should be the most important and is personally.. Its the one I first look for on a person. Even now, I try to get 5 wins off of each new map and I think I stay right at a 95% rate.

But I like players that will play any map rather than their comfort zones for just points.

feel good medals dont appeal to me. But I understand the new user look at it. Dont want to make things seem like a mountain to the new.

Although that assassin gold still looks like a friggin mountain to me with 200 more wins needed :S

Gotta agree with Army of Nobunga here. While it makes sense to have some "easy" medals, if they all are easy, they lose value. Also, there is far too little emphasis, I feel, on playing a wide variety of maps. Ironically enough, some of your anti-farming efforts actually discourage people from playing a lot of the more "unusual" maps regularly. This is a shame.

Personally I wonder if there could be a second tier of crossmap, whereby you would have to defeat more than 5 unique opponents on each map...
It could be done by keeping the current medal icons, but switching the ribbon colour depending on the number of unique opponents...

So, 5 unique opponents on 20 maps = Bronze ribbon + bronze globe.
5 unique opponents on 40 maps = Bronze ribbon + silver globe
5 unique opponents on 60 maps = Bronze ribbon + golden globe
--This is essentially the same as now, but the ribbon stays bronze, unless you then meet additional requirements, that could be as follows:
20 unique opponents on 40 maps = silver ribbon
100 unique opponents on 60 maps = golden ribbon

I agree with the principal, but you need to up the map numbers a LOT. Forty maps is hardly anything anymore.

Also, I might like to see some kind of "diversity" requirement, but that probably would be way to difficult to assess and implement fairly.

Should be done as a percentage of maps available at the time...

i.e. 40/60/80...

So if you hit 80% when there are 100 maps (i.e. 80) then you get and hold the gold...

But a year later it's 150 maps - so 80% is 120 - hit the 120 you get gold and you keep it...

This means later winners would be inherently at a disadvantage. To me, that would seem to discourage new players. The reason I suggested a revolving medal is that it would be something everyone would have to keep working toward.

Perhaps the way I thought of it was too much, though. Perhaps it should be that you get it for 100 cross maps, then to keep it, you have to win 5 times on x# new maps each month-- maybe a the new maps, plus 2-3 more, until you have them all. That way you would not have to win ALL the maps to begin, but you would still have to keep playing new maps, which I think is a worthy goal.
