http://dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/ ... t-says/?hp

The Article wrote:"The legal fight over the virtual knockoff of the Scrabble board game, which claims to have more than 700,000 players a day and nearly 3 million registered users, pits its creators, two brothers in Calcutta named Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla, against the companies that own the rights to Scrabble: Hasbro, which sells it in North America, and Mattel, which markets it everywhere else."

Still, they are now taking in $300,000 a year and, according to Silcion Alley’s back-of-the-envelope calculations, with a 10- to 20-times-revenue multiple that would make Scrabulous worth $3 million to $6 million. Allowing for a what the blog calls “a hockey-stick growth curve,” it could be worth more than $10 million, Silicon Alley said.

Holy shit.

It truly is a testament to lack though that he would forgo the advertising and miss out on this type of money to bring a better experience to us users. Thank you lack.

On a side note, why the hell would you want to play online Scrabble? Talk about boring...

I think this is turning into a debate of Ads -vs- No Ads.
However... the initial post was (I believe) about how the Man (i.e. the copyright holders of the game Risk) is going to come in and close down this site.

... for the record I am against Ads/Admins/Mods too! :D

Just kidding... I am tore about advertising versus no ads... of course I would prefer no ads... but is the "experience" any better if there aren't enough resources here to keep the systems running?

... back to the original idea of the thread...

Sites like CC will stay up so long as they attract little attention and make little money. As they get larger and begin to make more money... they will become targets for the corporate lawyers. It's inevitable.

That would be for the lawyers to debate.

I could argue that the way the dice work... (or fail to work as so many threads here believe  ) is the main foundation of the game. 3 dice for the attacker... 2 for the defender... ties go to the defense. That's an integral part of the board game.

In an ideal world... Milton Bradley or whatever Corporate Beast owns Risk would license the right like a franchise to run a game site like CC. CC could pay a percentage of profits or fee or whatever... but would have more control. You'd encourage competition amongst various sites. Who has the best interface... the best community... etc... people would have choices. You might have some sites with adult content that allow flame-war type trash-talk... and other family-friendly "g-rated" sites. They could all find a niche and co-exist.

If The Man gets his paws on it... all these sites, and a lot of what makes them great... will get boilded away. We'll be left with the lowest common denominator bland corporate trash.

IMOH

Jim :)
