Tournament Organization Suggestion

Postby Woodruff on Fri Apr 03, 2009 8:54 pm

Concise description:
  • Give Tournament Organizers the ability to "join" the players into their respective tournament games.

Specifics:
  • This was something that sailorseal mentioned in his interview, and I think it's a great idea. Basically, allow a Tournament Organizer to not only create the games for the players, but to then join the respective players INTO those games.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Save a great deal of tournament time, as the players would be auto-joined into the tournament games themselves. Then once the "first player to move" (which would still be randomly determined by the site software) logs in, the game takes off. As things currently stand, both players have to log in and then join the game, and THEN the "first player to move" is selected...a great difference in time, potentially.

Neat idea, however seems like too much power to me. What if a player doesn't have enough spots?

A good point. If they don't have the spots available, then they still wouldn't be able to be auto-joined, I would presume.

TO's make mistakes, I wouldn't want someone adding me to a wrong game or a game made with the wrong settings. I'm not sure you will be able to avoid this completely.

I'd also be against this suggestion. Some people don't have the time to join the games as soon as they receive it. If you send me games on Friday, but I'm going to be out of town over the weekend, it makes more sense to just join the games after I return rather than have my sitter take the turns. Also, there could easily be abuse such as putting people in a bunch of games that they'll probably lose just to rig somebody's points. Sure there can be punishments for doing that, but the damage would have already been done.

As opposed to someone joining 8 or 10 of the wrong games in the same tournament email? <smile>

Sure...though "over the weekend" could very well mean "not joining the game within the required time" anyway in many cases, right? This would avoid you having deadbeated out of the match.

In all seriousness, if we're going to make our capabilities based on the minute possibilities of abuse instead of on the greater good of the site, then this site is never going to improve in any way.

ANYTHING can be abused...as we've all seen, just the ability to create new accounts can be MASSIVELY abused. To the same detriment of those folks that you're defending here. And yet, the ability for someone to create a new account is not stopped, and I think we've clearly seen that "multi creation" is abused far more than even the high end of the likelihood of my suggestion.

For a site "loosely based" on a game called Risk, this site is but a sad shadow of it's possibility. You guys are holding yourselves back, and for no seriously apparent reason.

Don't be all over the player, the TO was partially to blame.

I think there are better tools that TO's would rather have.

No argument. But my tournament is certainly not the only one this happens in...in fact, I would say it's a quite frequent occurrence, based only on the tournaments that I myself join.

Whereas my suggestion would make that 100% the TO's responsibility...it COULDN'T get screwed up by the player. That's a very good improvement, in my opinion.

There probably are, though I'm not coming up with any off-hand. We don't seem to be getting those either. They're probably too easy to abuse in some minute way.

As a tournament player, I would hate this. I want to know which games I'm joining, and in many cases I like to join in a particular order as well.

Seems like the easiest thing to do is for the TO to be able to set slot/game reservations (unordered) to which the password mechanism currently used would be replaced with a simple lookup list of members allowed to join the game.

That would be one of the useful tools to have.

Well since I suggested it I feel obligated to support it, the only way I feel mistakes/abuse could be avoided is that TOs could delete games even after they had started

This is never even done by Lack for cheating purposes. Why do you think it would be allowed for tournament organizers?

I was not suggesting it should be done, I was saying that is the only way it would work and we all now that does not happen

Sounds interesting, but I'm not sure I follow your terminology. Could you explain it a bit better for those of us who...uh...read slower than others? <laughing>

I suppose I can understand that. For me (as a tournament player), I'd just as soon rather not have to worry about doing it. But I am admittedly lazy. <smile>

Don't feel obligated (I'm serious). Support it if you agree with it, but supporting something that you don't agree with is just plain silly.

I disagree that this is the only way it would work. The few times that mistakes happen can just be ignored (as is currently done when a player joins the wrong games) and abuse can be handled in the same way that abuse is always handled here...as a separate issue not related to the tournament itself.

Now I really support the suggestion :D

It doesn't matter, since the people running this place can't seem to drag themselves into thinking outside of the box a little bit.

I thought out of the box and said it was a bad idea. Just because something is out of the box doesn't make it a good idea.
