Suggestion: Ratings tag for "Point Farmer"

Concise description: When a player leaves feedback, there are flags for stuff like "complainer" etc. I think there should be a tag for "Point Farmer".
  • This would make it easy to see who, in the opinion of the people they have played, are holding/gaining rank by farming
  • Let people have a little warning before they get into a match on a "specialist" map with these folks
  • Very simple to implement - just add another checkbox on the feedback form.

Specifics:
  • Self Explanatory. If you play someone who you think was trying for farm points either baiting in noobs or dealing in 100s of games with the same obscure "specialist" settings/maps, then you should be able to share that information with the cc community by leaving an appropriate tag in the feedback.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Let people on this site who might check ratings know what the deal is with players.
  • Put a reputation cost on point farming.

I personally feel you're over-reacting, my favourite map is Circus Maximus, but I don't play it because there are too many deadbeats, I could feasibly just play loads of them but I only play them every so often to find out whether it is still newbie domain. And also if they are point farmers both players could be given the rating, think about it, if there are 2 crowns in an 8 player crossword, aren't both of them point farming, or attempting to do so.

The definition (I believe) means playing anyone who is significantly less skilled than you for easy points. It is not only new recruits.

This seems like it would seldom be used properly. The people who get farmed generally don't realize it so they wouldn't know to tag for it. The people who do know about it are unlikely to be farmed but may still play against that person. They might think because that person is a farmer they should tag him even though they are not being farmed by that person, that is wrong. Additionally a good of people on the site would not even know what the tag means and would possibly use it incorrectly.

I think noob farming and having a specialized map are 2 different things.

Noob Farming: I always thought that joining a 1 on 1 regular game with a ? was noob farming, because chances were that the ? would deadbeat.

Specialized Map: I have a specialized map, and I know that my intention isn't for the worst player possible to join for easy points. Yeah, sometimes it happens, but that isn't your main goal.

That's the flaw in the suggestion as I see it. A noob who's just been farmed won't know it and won't use the tag. So the proposed benefit - that it'll be easy to see who the farmers are - won't actually be realised :|

the only way someone could give a farmer ratings would be by farming themselves

exapmle: the only way to give someone who only plays 8 player waterloo with a noob farmer would be to join that game and then, wouldnt they be farming too?

Well, not exactly. You can tell a farmer pretty easily from the chat.

They tend to say stuff like "I win every time from first, so gg" when the game has just started, and they will get really pissy when one of their low-rank/noob produce actually wins... I believe the classic catch phrase is: "You got lucky noob!".

This could work. It won't be perfect, but it could work. And the fact that you know a farmer after the game is over is precisely the point. That's when you get to leave the rating.

what defines point farming? Meaning, how many point difference between the 2 players ( assuming a 1 vs 1 ) qualifies for being farmed?

I don't consider 1v1 games point farming. Point farming to me is an 8 player game with a Major (or higher) and 6 or 7 Recruits (other not higher than Corporal)

  1. Why ask for feedback on whether someone is a farmer when it can be objectively, reliably and automatically calculated?

There is a thread with a very similar aim started by Scott-Land and the first steps toward a solution have already been implemented by Chipv.

    http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=57658&start=45

Chipv implemented something in MapRank he calls Relative Rank. He takes the mean of the ratios of your opponents' scores to your score.

He picked the cutoff of 0.5 to apply the label of Noob Farmer. One who, on average, plays opponents less than 1/2 their score. You need to download MapRank and then type the players name and wait for the calculation.

  2. Providing information to noobs won't solve this problem.

Often it is the farmer that joins the noob's games. And generally, noobs are too inexperienced and not yet invested enough in this game to really care about their plight or take notice of any "farmer" icon that might be beside someone's name. Plus, I think we can solve this problem without shaming anybody with a label like that.

We just need to limit the positive recognition that can be attained by those tending to farm considerably weaker opponents, while at the same time providing some positive recognition for players that do not tend to play noobs.

  3. What can we practically hope for?

What we can practically hope for in the short term, is that Chipv may include a "generate competitive scoreboard" option that would perform these calculations on the current scoreboard (which includes many non-competitive players) to create a scoreboard of competitive players.

For specifics on this idea, you can refer to my suggestion:

    http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=70978&start=0

I initially suggested a different metric to be used to determine competitiveness, but now I think Chipv's is better.

This is a step in the right direction but to actually solve the problem, CC needs to implement a system on the actual site so that everybody (not just those with MapRank) can see that farmers don't make it to the top of the competitive scoreboard.
