Delete Comments in Game Chat

Postby samuelc812 on Mon Sep 08, 2008 6:50 am

Concise description:
  • Enabled deletion of Gamechat

Specifics:
  • I think it would be good for the ability for players to delete comments that they have made in gamechat, if they get really angry at someone and say something hurtful in gamechat then realise it was wrong they should be able to delete it

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Prevent unecessary arguments
  • Prevent Abuse perhaps unless the person actually ment it

I like this, but for a differant reason. I hate when I cannot correct typos. When my son was a bit younger, I would often play with him in my arms ... sometimes with funny or not-so funny chat results.

Also, this can be a real issue in team games, when accidentally clicking the wrong thing can leave private chat not so private. IF you could delete it, at least some of the damage could be averted.

Perhaps a "delete last post" function could work - disabled after game archive/completion?

Kinda similar to the forum!?

Poor idea - if you're in an anger spasm, you should have to deal with the consequences of what you say.

It's like getting drunk and punching someone in the face, then realizing it was wrong, removing all evidence that you punched the guy in the face.

Man up to your words.

If they havn't read it yet it would not be a punch in the face, and See it as a way of saying sorry and forgetting it if they have seen it ;)

I'm not making unnecessary comments, I'm just reminding you not to spam, and you said virtually the same thing twice.

look closely and you will notice i didn't

samuelc812 wrote:Yes that is a good idea ;)

The first time i was agreeing with yeti_c and his idea

samuelc812 wrote:Yes i think it is a good idea ;)

The second time i was agreeing with Herakilla

I was agreeing with 2 separate people and since i started the thread i should be able to agree with as many people as i want.

You could also say that yeti_cand Herakilla said the same sort of thing but you didn't!

Let's stick to the topic of the thread shall we.

i think yours are the unnecessary comments Blake.

I am not sure if yeti's amendment safeguards this; gamechat is a record of behaviour, sometimes including cheats accidental admission. so i am not so much a fan of this idea yet.

Back to the original idea ...

Whether it is someone having second thoughts about what they said OR simply making a mistake ... it would be nice to have some option to delete, or at least a confirmation "do you want to post this".

If not universally, then AT LEAST for team games. I have more than once hit the button only to find the "private" button was not checked and everyone could see my comment.

i was commenting on the idea ..

i suggested before that there should be 2 buttons: 'comment private' and 'comment public' (the tick box system is flawed): another idea to drip into the sea of ignored endeavour {click here}

but you should not be able to delete any gamechat.

If it was the most recent thing posted (like in the forums) it wouldn't matter as much.

Sure it would. Many people get busted by the chat they typed by accident. Chat needs to be left. If you did not mean to type F You...blah blah... Then just send a PM after the game and say sorry. It works a good bit of the time.

busted?

If you are talking secret alliances ... that does not apply to teams. If you mean multis, I don't think a person needs to use chat to talk to themself.

If you mean bad language, etc. ... then deleting it would solve any unintentional issues.

BUT, I believe we are mostly referring to errors ... and some rethinking (cooling off??).

many people do actually admit misdemeanour's in chat.. i know it seems amazing.

Regarding errors.. this is mainly due to the flawed tick-box system.. so something to update that may be good.

With regards abuse .. well i think that is unfair to the abused. The abuser could rile another, then delete the abusive text .. the annoyed could see the text but not comment immediately then retaliate. (the abuser then just need write something like "calm down please" and the text is frozen)

Any impartial observer would only see the retaliatory abuse. The instigator could complain and get the one they riled-up warned.

As I said before - would be solved by just being able to delete the last post - if you see someone has posted an admission of something - post a comment - then it will be locked forevermore.

But the ability to delete "Break green on the left - I'll drop you and look after Blue" that was unintentionally sent to the whole game instead of teams - would be good.

And also - the amount of team games where I've said something just to my team mates - when it was meant for the whole team is countless!!

Also, if someone says something in the "heat of the moment" and then deletes it before someone else can respond ...

If you react, then YOU ARE guilty, too. Or, you can just delete your own chat, if you realize you overreacted. Basically, just like before in feedback, most people are able to "read between the lines" to see what happened. The issue here is primarily mistakes and, only occasionally, re-thinking chat you left.

But, no one is really "cracking down" on chat "abuse" now anyway... and you can leave whatever rating you wish for whatever reason.

Maybe it could be delete the post only if you posted it in the last 5 mins.

If someone was foolish enough the say something incriminating, I doubt they'd thikn of deleting it. And if you say something in the 'heat of the moment' or accidently say something to your opposition in a team game, you have a chance to recover.

This sounds reasonable to me, though having it like the forums -- where you can delete until someone else posts -- might be easier to program (??? -- admin???) and would essentially do the same thing.
