Allow Mods to Lock Specific Users Out of Specific Threads

Postby PepperJack on Wed Aug 27, 2008 1:22 pm

Concise description:
  • Sometimes threads that have constructive discussions ongoing are locked by mods b/c community members get into pissing matches with each other. Many times the flaming is gracefully dodged by other members and discussion continues. If the pissing match goes on long enough a mod comes and locks down the topic (rightfully so). The issue is that the ongoing discussion is mowed down as an innocent bystander in this locking drive-by. The Maxatstuy thread is an excellent example.

Specifics:
  • Give the mods the ability to lock specific users out of specific threads. (Functions like a targetted forum ban.)
  • Mods maintain their current ability to completely lock a thread.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Threads are not prematurely locked.
  • On-topic discussion can continue where it began instead of being shut down.
  • Discourages flaming outside appropriate venues.

Great idea! Similar to putting somebody on your foe list and having it hide their comments...but takes it even a step farther!

Can't be done, it's as simple as that

While "knowing" it can't be done obviously tempers my expectations, I'm going indulge my naivete. I'm not programmer so perhaps you could put it in layman's terms as to why this is an impossibility. Is it even a programming issue actually? I just assumed it was since its impossible. Just looking for a little more substance than what you provided.

as you may or may not know, the forums are ran using a software called phpbb3, this software is made by the phpbb company and is not made/adjusted by lack or anyone else on Team CC. If you really wanted 'Thread Bans' you might suggest it at phpbb's Community website (clicky) as a MOD

Thank you for the info. I dug around a bit and such a mod existed for phpbb2 but its development ended two-ish years ago and was never updated for compatibility with phpbb3. The update has been requested recently though. Perhaps Thread Bans won't be impossible for long.

Why can't these peopel who go off task, just get a 24 hour forum ban? Sound perfect to me. Or at least warming, but let the thread continue on. I mean I think we can all agree, that if you see a courtroom process going on, and someone gets out of hand, they just remove this person, for a period of time or all of it. The courtroom does not stop because 2 people get a bit out of hand. Formal warning, and or 24 hour bans seem perfectly fine.

Bruce, formal warnings are given. These can be given by any mod. Locks can only be performed by forum mods in their specific forums. Bans can only per handed down by the admin and hunters. The reason that bans are not handed down more often is because it is such a harsh penalty against the user and because it is seen as the last resort. I would personally be in favor of the option to lock certain people out of threads for a set amount of time (if someone could write the mod that would be appreciated). This would result in less threads being derailed and less PMs and warnings being sent. Also, Bruce, warnings are not always heeded. I have sent warnings and made posts in threads and the threads have continued on their merry way off somewhere into the oblivion. Right now, the only way to guarantee that a thread does not get completely hijacked is to lock it (even when one user is banned, others can still respond).
