Option: Convert from Speed to casual after set time (POLL)

Speed to Casual Concise description:
Have, as an OPTION, game that start as speed games, then automatically convert to casual after a set amount of time.
  YES! I DID MISLABEL THE TITLE AT FIRST!!! (now corrected)
I also added a poll.
Specifics:
2 Possibilities:

One set time (say 2 hours) OR let the game originator choose a time limit.

For the "set" time, I would say 2 hours.
For the "pickable" times, I would say 1/2, 1,2 and 3 hour options.

NOTE: this is an alternative to the existing thread "convert casual games to speed games"
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=28750#p734140

This will improve the following aspects of the site:

1. Allow folks to keep playing a game that is taking longer than they expected.

2. Offer a way to "speed up" bigger games, particularly 8 player. You are not committing to spending 6 hours on the computer, but also can cut several weeks, even months off the time the game will last.

3. Unlike the other suggestion, because the time limit is set in advance, there is no issue with folks pressuring others to either change or not change from speed to casual play. Some might still do the "we gotta play 'real time' now" card, but well, you can't prevent everything. Because people will know the "rules"/ parameters in advance, "pressure" problems should be greatly reduced.

4. I, and probably other people, more or less avoid speed games, except the REALLY small/fast ones, because we cannot gaurantee long blocks of time. This is the main reason I included the 1/2 hour option, by-the-way. That's usually long enough for me to finish a game while my kids nap or after I put them down for the night, without meaning I will be up to 2 in the morning.

5. As an option, it won't keep anyone from playing the "regular" speed games, but will offer a viable, needed, alternative.

MEDALS: I would say that for medals, this should count as a "casual" game, basically the "default". The speed game medal should be just for true speed games.

Actually Jimi - it's the opposite?!

PS - personally I dislike this option.

well to convert from casual to speed:
I am not sure how the idea could work.. i have gone through it myself previously on trying to find a solution to 'stalemate' games and the main issue is that you could not get all players together at the same time. Casual players chose to be as time may not be as open for them. also you are more likely to have players from all over the world for whom never the twain shall meet.

the other way around: from speed to casual, i am fine with but it is similar to the other thread i posted the link to... i think.

Nah it really is the same. This one wants to have a set time limit the other one wants a vote but the main point of both is to go from a speedgame to casual one.

No no... the title says it all... "Convert from Casual to Speed"

But you are right - the content of the post (which I ignored as I disliked the suggestion from the title) - seems to point the other way!?

i dont think its worth it personally, everyone would have to be online at the same time and agree to it, that would rarely happen except in really small games. but a good though

The OP needs to edit the title of this thread, as the current title leads us to think he's suggesting something completely ridiculous, that no one would need. When, in actuality, the suggestion is a popular one, just worded poorly.

YES, my BIG goof, I worded the title wrong.

This is similar, BUT I think the difference is significant.

In the other option, the proposal was to have the players vote. I felt that had the potential for abuse, player threats, etc. (as described above). Initially, I just posted to that thread, but since this really is not the same suggestion, I started a new thread.

Yes, if players agree (not automatic -- see other thread)

If everyone agrees, this can help many stalemate games.

It would apply to Jim's current stalemate- freeze option. A speed game that has gone stale, would be converted to a casual game and in turn would be [frozen] as another one would be started to settle the stale. Hehee- sure does sound like a lot of work to save a few points. Who said points doesn't matter.....

My thinking was that if converted automatically, folks could still treat it like a speed game.

I DO think it needs to be an option, not set because sometimes people play speed games because they NEED to finish in a few hours.
