Compact / Lite screen layouts

Concise description:
  • Alternate screen layouts

Specifics:
  • Knowing that different people use different screen resolutions, and that not all of the information fits on one screen, might be nice to have options in Control Panel for 'lite' screen layouts, or 'compact' layouts.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Less communication missed in team chat, leading to better team co-ordination. We've all missed important info by not reading game chat before or during our move, don't pretend like it hasn't happened to you 8-)

Example of 1280x1024 that fits all on one screen with no scroll bar (obviously the text would have to wrap, you'll have to use your imagination for that one):

If you're going to make a serious suggestion, you shouldn't make an insulting poll to go with it. That makes readers not want to take you seriously.

That being said, I do like that layout with the Game log and chat side-by-side.

Insulting? Uh... ok. Eggshells eh. I happen to appreciate lacks efforts here, as is evident by my premium membership. If the poll is insulting to anyone, its me in a self-deprecating manner. Sheesh, lighten up. I tell you what, I'll change it to Yes / No, bland it up a little.

Anyhow, I was suggesting it as an alternative, not a permanent change for everyone. As an option in Control Panel, so players can customise the way the screen layout looks.

Here's a mockup of an interface that would work well for those with smaller screens/lower resolution monitors.

I find that the classic map doesn't pose much of a problem, but I'm a World 2.1 whore and having to scroll up and down the screen and play in "full screen" isn't ideal.

You'll notice that moving that left sidebar (perhaps to the top of the page) creates so much space for other elements to fit.

The game history is important, but doesn't have to be in "prime space"... I don't often use chat... and it's certainly not the type of chat you would use in real-time, so that can also be removed from "prime space" if needed.

On world 2.1 specifically, the value legend below the map takes up far too much space and it would be cool if that portion could be collapsible, so the user can hide it if they don't need it in view.

(Not an official statement)
To me it just seems like you are trading vertical scrolling for lateral scrolling. Just saying...

Well, monitors are wider than they are tall, so there is no need for horizontal scrolling if the elements are placed right.
:D

Horizontal scrolling is a bad thing in a design...

Essentially your idea is to move the map over the left bar... thus allowing more space on the right...

However - (As BOB already does this) I think there isn't enough space on the lower res'... remember that CC's minimum res is 1024*768. Some of the wider maps still give little space on the right for players names.
