Skipped turns

Postby Wendt100 on Wed Jun 18, 2008 2:56 am

Administration staff,

I know this has been posted several times. This week I have had 6 turnkey games held up by people skipping turns just to build up guys and deploy 9 guys some where on the board. I see this happening more and more as time goes on if you continue to reward players for skipping turns. If I am going to be gone I try to have a sub play! If you miss or skip a turn you should loose those guys or there at least be a setting controlled by the players that can decide what happens(receive guys or lose guys on missed turn)!.

The issues with the current concept are:
1) It delays play! Especially, if you have more than 2 players in an 8 player game doing it.
2) It rewards players for slow play!
3) It penalizes the ones who diligently play the game in a timely manner! :x
4) It goes against what the rating system pushes for(fast play and good attendance)

I strongly agree. It would also be nice if new/unrated players could be booted after two (or even one) missed turn. It is *really* frustrating to have to wait three full days to get rid of some loser who signed up, joined a game and never came back. I try not to join games with new/unrated players but it's really rather unavaoidable.

If this is such a viable strategy, why have you not started doing it?
The thing is, it is a poor strategy and I will explain why, if you care to read on.
1)Yes, it does delay play, but if the person were to take 23 hours 52 min before they took a turn, it would do the same thing. You would still have to wait just as long.
2) It does not reward people for slow play. You are only allowed to deploy the men at the end of your next played turn and they can only be deployed on one spot.
3) If the players that are active see the person miss a turn, they should attack that player. There are a few reasons, the most important being: If the player is slated to receive more than 3 armies on their next turn, you can make that number lower. They were not able to reposition after you took your last turn, so you get two turns to break any of their bonuses (territory counts above 11 are a bonus). If you do not break their bonuses, it is your fault that they are getting more armies on the next turn. Also, this compounds. Assume, if someone is supposed to get 8 armies on their next turn, and they miss so you bring them down to 3 armies per turn. When they come back, they only get 3 armies and they only get 3 deferred armies, not the 8 that they missed.
4) Rate them low if they miss turns, that is why the rating system was introduced.

We were all losers then, at one time or another. Three turns is really not too long to wait to really get a game rocking. If you really want to support the CC community, pony up the $25 and go premium. Then this will no longer matter to you.

No, it would still matter because I don't have enough time to sign up for more than three games when they're all active (particularly games on maps like World 2.1 which can take a lot of time) -- so it's really disappointing when one gets jammed up and I don't dare sign up for another . . . .

I probably will go for premium anyways -- but I'm curious to see how this and the double turn stuff work out first. I've been running into more and more people with no lives who can afford to hang out to take severe advantage. Not much fun and severe incentive to not only not go premium but to go and find another game site.

I tend to agree on one point : new recruits should be kicked off immediately if they miss their first turn. This would speed up many games.

Actually, after being burned again by a hang-out loser. I think I'm going to cut back even more until the double turn stuff is resolved. If it can't be avoided, I'm probably outta here cuz it *really* isn't fun for those of us with lives.

Here's how it goes. There is life. Life happens. People can't avoid it because it's there. They can't see it and a lot of the times it blind sights people. As Mrs. Gump put it, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." It's as simple as that. People who play might have other activities to do or have some sort of emergency far greater in importance than CC. Now this isn't their fault, why should they be punished because a family member was sent to the hospital or something of the sort. I don't agree at all with you're argument, especially the bolded, and therefore have determined that you are a rude and inconsiderate person for not think of people with lives outside of CC. I think that this system is far more effective than the original. Think before you act, just because some people abuse it is not a good enough reason to change it, in my opinion.

Sincerely,
Strife.

I have come up with an absolutely BRILLIANT solution for skipped turns.

Keep it the same.. when you come back get your 1 turn of armies.. play your turn.. End turn - and let the computer AUTO DEPLOY the "missed turn armies" and not just on one spot. 1 army on every territory you have starting at the territories with 1 army.

so if you have 10-15 armies coming due to missed turns - they are spread out over the entire map.

I too have had countless games of people INTENTIONALLY missing turns to do this. Intentionally because I see them ONLINE - I see them playing other games, but yet, they do not play the one we are in together. THIS IS INTENTIONAL - and in my opinion - ITS CHEATING! yes, some people, including myself, have missed turns for legitimate reasons - there is life outside of CC - (I know this is a shock to some -but really there is life out side of this site)...(grin)... But at least you get your armies still, but you are not allowed to used them as an advantage.

I believe if you implement this method it would REALLY deter people from intentionally missing turns and cheating to gain an advantage! And for those who missed turns due to "legitimate reasons" - they will understand .
"Did you hear that Meg? Guys can marry other guys now. So, this is awkward, but I mean, if they can do that, that is pretty much it for you, isn't it? I mean you might as well pack it in. Game over."

I'm a new user just trying to enjoy playing/learning at this site, but I have already seen the "power" of the missed turn rise up and bite me & others. I was surprised to see users rewarded after missing 2 turns. I'm in no postion to demand anything, but I appreciate being able to be heard through the forum that this "skipping a turn" issue may keep me from playing future games. This is a great site with great games and and a keen eye for improvements it appears. Hopefully some modification of the skipped turn will be applied, not only to "newbies", but to ranked players as well.

Yes, Life happens....As it did for me this weekend. The person who was playing for me missed a day. I should have lost those guys. I apologized to all who were in the games I missed.

If you are stuck in traffic on the way to your baseball game, do you get to hit twice when you get there because you missed you first at bat? :?:

I think the delayed army deployment is a fair balance.

If you feel people are skipping turns on purpose, leave them a low rating for attendance and fair play. If enough people do that it will discourage such behaviour!
