8 man wipeouts - what if you're out before it even starts?

Postby caricaturd on Fri Feb 29, 2008 2:32 am

Hey gang,
So I'm really liking the expansion to 8person games, but it got me thinking - should players really have to lose points if they're taken out before they even get to roll? Obviously my quibble doesn't apply to team games, or freestyle, but when playing sequential, singles games, being last in an 8 person queue may just be a death sentence. Again, I wouldn't complain about this facet of gameplay if say, I chose to do an 8 person game on doodle earth, but I was recently playing on a fairly large map (Hong Kong), and was more of less out of the game before my turn came up.

So I was wondering - is there anyway to reduce or altogether excuse point penalties for players who are taken out before they ever get to play? This of course would only apply for the rules of a standard, sequential game, but I was just wondering if others felt such an exception should be made.

What is "more or less?" If you took your turn you weren't out. If you weren't out you could have started saving your armies for a big attack 4 or 5 turns down the road.

Luck is part of the game. I like having a feel for how many points a game is worth. If a player is so worried that they will be taken out in large games then they should play in smaller games but I don't think changing the scoring system in this respect would be an improvement.

the OP does bring up a vaild point what if the last person to play in an 8 player fame gets eliminated before his turn even starts? doodle map would be a very good possibility that this would occur for example.

Agreed. They have an equal shot of going first and not being eliminated as they do going last and being eliminated. Every other player in that game runs the same risk. Just because you randomly went last doesn't you mean you deserve special treatment.

Don't like it? Don't play 8p Doodle/Duck and Cover games.

point taken. but in response to Gabonx, I was just citing that particular game as an example. I'm really only concerned about games where you're completely eliminated before your first turn. In all other cases, one could make the argument that comebacks are possible - which I agree with. But if you're taken out before you ever actually get to start, I think there may be room for adjustment in the point reduction system. yes, its randomized, and i have an equal chance of going first, but you still have to feel for the person who never gets to drop the dice. Any changes to the score system I'm suggesting would only occur within this relatively small percentage of games where a player is taken out without a fighting chance
