tags in titles in join a tournie sub forum - suggestion

<Body>:

* Suggestion Idea:
Various tags be added to titles in the join a tournie forum so at first glance a potential player can see which threads would be of potential interest to them

* Specifics:
Add a tag to the title showing if it's a 1v1, sing, doub, trip, quad tournie

add a tag to show if its a league, bracket, ladder etc.

add a tag if its premium only

(i may be leaving others out but you get the idea)

* Why it is needed:

I play in a large number of tournies (although not as many as I used to), I often peek into the join a tournie forum to see if there is anything that interests me, I'm certain several others do the same however many (including me) I believe leave again while missing tournies that might be just what they/we are looking for as there is no indication in the title to enlighten them.

I realise most include the relevant details in their first post but this suggestion is to capture players prior to that, that you otherwise may have already lost, to draw them in to read that first post (no offense on the organisers involved but) here are a sample of some current tournies seeking sign ups where the title gives very limited / no info about what the tournie involves:

Down and Dirty I (49/64)
EIOT Musical Chairs (32|64)
A SECOND CHANCE [JOIN NOW - 8 spots left]
The Mod Wars [PREMIUM PRIZE] [Reserves Needed]
Lost in Translation Tournament (32|64)
Grand Slam (98/128 places left)(34/64 minimum left)
Restaurant Tournament
EIOT Battle for Waterloo (22/64)
EIOT The C-list (25|64)
EIOT Mission – Survive the Longest V4.0 (35|64)
EIOT Alien Invasion (24|64)
Heineken Cup 2007/2008 [23/24]
Easter Rising Tournament - Ireland (relaunch)
Conquer The World <27/60> ACCEPTING NON-PREMIUM
The premiership (needing reserves again)
Reserves Needed [urgent!]: Battle of the Bands
Around CC Open Season - {On Hold}
Battle of the Ranks (36/40) - 4 majors or above needed
The Classic Drop Down Tournament (Delete)
TO; Qualify, WC 2010 - "RESERVE-POOL"

i already do but bear in mind i spend most of my time on this site in live chat (im one of the chat mods) where im constantly directing new players to the join a tournie forum, and this suggestion is as much based on their feedback as my own experience.

This suggestion is simple to implement and has no potential down side to me it's a no brainer

I totally agree with rebelman on this (thanks for pointing the way to this thread as I don't come to Suggestions very often). As an organizer it would be terrific to be able to let people know what the tournament is at a glance. As the organizer of the very first tourney (Down and Dirty I) that Rebel listed as a problem I totally understand. I know signups there ran a bit slower than I'm used to because the name didn't have the catch for people to even look at it. (Its full now so I'm not promoting it by the way). On the other hand, if there were little tabs to show 4player, escalating, chained, sunny then people who like that type of format could easily take a look at it and join rather than having to enter all 10-15 of the actively joining tournies at one time

Thanks for your feedback, barterer2002. I'm glad you like the idea.

ps I hope you understand i wasn't singling you and the other organisers out in my above post, I was just using your tournies as examples of what i am talking about

i do like the idea it is just that we already have a way of providing that information (the weekly newsletter) and most organisers aren't providing a summary of what their tourney entails so i just think - cool feature but organisers too lazy to use.

agreed

but if it read:

EIOT Battle for Waterloo (22/64) [brack][1v1][sun]

you would know at a glance its a sunny 1 v 1 bracket tournie

whereas if it read

EIOT Battle for Waterloo (22/64) [dub elim][quad][fog]

you would then know at a glance it was a a double elimination quads tournie with fog of war.

ps i actually dont know what format it is those 2 examples are purely that.

laziness can be overcome if its a requirement it would take a few secs when they set it up initally. If organisers were told without tags lke this they will not be granted privs I'm sure they would get over their laziness quickly

now that i really like, if it could also be required that the same info is provided for the mailout or no privs - a perfect world.

Indeed - sadly the tournie in question is sunny...

But what about tournies where you choose options etc?

Yeah - but what applies to what...

So a tourney that said

Daves Tourney [Classic, Choice, Various, Random] means bugger all except that it's on Classic map.

the problem with that is, what rebel is more refering to i think is the newer players, hell i didnt even know we had a news letter until about 2 weeks ago :P but the news tha are cold and hungry wondering off the streets just looking for a good warm tourny to call there own have no idea whats going on lol

Im in full support of this idea!

1 issue i see-lack of space, In most of my tourny sign ups i add in the title 1v1 or quads, but none of the othre extra info, and even without the extras ive ran out of space a couple times, and had to delete " " space in place of more capital letters, just makes it look tacky lol

perhaps in that case you would just say "Daves Tourney [Classic]" and nothing more... if every tournament organizer is going with the format, a lack of options means that itwould be your choice, or it is yet undecided

First off, I feel that it's a bad idea to require this information in the Newsletter. If Gozar wishes to do so, that's his choice and his work.

This idea is also irrelevant for requesting privileges. They can't be requested until after the tournament is full, so why should a TD bother to check if this tag is included?? Steel and Optimus don't care (in their roles as TDs) what specific formats people use for their tournaments, just that they are run smoothly without being abandoned.

Now, with this being said, I believe that it is the organizer's responsibility to find the best way to fill their own tournament. When I recruited for Heroes: Choose Your Power, I included a tag that said [4 player games]. This was because of the high amount of 1v1 tournaments being created at that time. I also included [6 player doubles] for Amazing Race. If an organizer wants to fill up the tournament in an efficient manner, they need to make an attractive, easy-to-understand first post as well as information in the topic header. If any organizers need help with these, I'm sure a TD would be glad to provide assistance.

Perhaps someone should make up a list of abbreviations that could be used in headings. Then PM them to Optimus to make a sticky or something. Or do the work in one of the Tournament forums.

That would work better...

So the Tags would be for all things that are set... - I guess there is always a "type" of tourney too...

i.e. RR - Bracket - League etc...

no-one is suggesting that, I'm definitely not nor is any other poster, if this was a mafia thread you would be chastised for skimming !!

Seriously there were only a few posts before yours would it have been that hard to read them fully before posting !! all I said in relation to privs is that it could be made a requirement that would ensure that it would happen - bear in mind again this measure is primarily geared towards making that forum more user friendly and a more welcoming, less intimidating place for new players

Now, with this being said, I believe that it is the organizer's responsibility to find the best way to fill their own tournament. When I recruited for Heroes: Choose Your Power, I included a tag that said [4 player games]. This was because of the high amount of 1v1 tournaments being created at that time. again you miss the point here, this proposal is not about helping tournament organisers fill their tournies faster although that may happen because of it, its about improving the look of the forum and making it more user friendly for tournie players. As a knock on to this tournie organisers may reap some benefits but that is not the primary goal.

Perhaps someone should make up a list of abbreviations that could be used in headings. Then PM them to Optimus to make a sticky or something. Or do the work in one of the Tournament forums.

A thread could be made to work these out in the tournament discussion forum if this suggestion gets approved but right now its only a suggestion so doing anything else would be presuptuious on my part until it gets approval.

Rebelman, I did read the thread. This quote is where I got those first two points.

NS what that person was suggesting was more tos should submit their details to gozar which is actually something he himself has asked for.

as for the making it a privs requirement again this is just a suggestion as one way to overcome laziness

So, you know what is really funny about this entire thread? I've already discussed tagging the threads with "Singles, Doubles, Triples, Quads, 1 vs 1, etc." with Twill and Lack. Like......3 months ago at least.

This entire thread makes me chuckle.

Now, in regards to all the variety of tags being mentioned here, I think things are getting a bit overboard. I can see mention of using things such as:

Singles
Doubles
Triples
Quads
1 vs 1
Fog
Sunny
Bracket
Round-Robin
Various Map Names

...and so on down the list.

Keep in mind folks, that the thread titles can only be so long, and speaking as an organizer, I like to use a majority of my title space for the actual title of the tournament. It allows me more creativity.

If anything, we should do something that just specifies the type of gameplay. We don't need to be listing maps and fog and bracket or no bracket. If you knew it was doubles or singles and you were interested then it is up to the player to take a peek inside the thread to find the exact details for the tournament.

Don't get too carried away with what should possibly be tagged because then the whole purpose of "cleaning things up" is moot as you've just through tons of stuff into a title that the first time tournament player has no clue what it means.

I can think of LOTS of things to overcome organizer laziness.....I'll just get in trouble if I make them happen......

i agree less is more to be honest even if we had singles, doubs, trips, quads, 1 v1 that would be an improvement on the status quo.
