Speed Games

Postby Scott-Land on Sun Jan 27, 2008 3:21 am

Not sure how long speed games are open until it automatically drops-- I want to say 15 minutes. The time on that is fine I think-- but perhaps it resets or adds a 5 minute time extension when someone joins?

yada yada about the form- anyone thinks it's a reasonable request can fill out the forms. Just wanted to bring it up........

how about it extends by 5 mins only when the last 2 slots are left unfilled? it makes sense that way.
If there are more than 2 slots still left after 15 mins, then its unlikely that the last few slots will be filled in 5 mins?

This is assuming you're talking about singles only and no dubs/trips/quads

How about getting rid of the 15 minute rule altogether?

Let people be responsible for dropping out if they don't wanna play no more.

that may create unintentional deadbeat(ing)-- if someone forgets that they joined but i'm all for not having to recreate a new one if it doesn't fill....especially when there's only one slot left.

any change would be good..........

agreed. i get annoyed when im in a game and then it drops with 7 people. i like the idea of having an extra 5 mins. if someone adds in the last 2 or 3 spots left

Let the person who makes the game decide whether or not to have a timer.

Bad idea as the amount of deadbeaters will be horrific

Would it be horrific? If someone forgets to drop, after getting some negative fedback the person should learn the lesson and not do it again, no?

Making the 15 minute rule an option is not an option.

i agree-- it wouldn't be horrific. mainly from players that started one and forgotten they did. i do like the automatic drop option but perhaps a wee bit more time..............

if i had to choose which one; eliminate the drop feature or leave it the way it is-- i'd choose the latter.

Logging out is easy. Remembering you joined a game that never filled out is... well not..
I really liked the 15 minutes game dropped rule once I knew it was there. I imagined it to have been installed for precisely that reason, to prevent people from deadbeating because they already logged out..
Imagine my surprise when it was apparently open for debate.. Anyways.

Keeping the 15-minute to fill the game timeslot pretty much guarantees that those players are still online. It’s useful to keep the playlist small and prevents clutter. It also helps to ensure the speed and activity and with it the status of having a paying account. Speedgames are simply good for business.
At least thats my view, but so far I failed to purchase premium

The 15 minute rule sucks as is because:

1. If you join the game during the 14th minute it will suddenly disappear after 1 minute!!

2. 15 mins is often not enough time for larger games to fill up during off hours.

I'm inclined to scrap it.

If people are still forgetting to drop after giving the new rule some time (like a month) then I can program something to auto-drop you if your session isn't active.

But with negative feedback and lost points as a deterrent, I think scrapping the rule without fancy player auto-drop is better than keeping the rule.

I think scrapping the idea would be fine, but I can see the validity of the arguments against it.

Would adding a refresh button be an option?

If it isn't scrapped, adding a note on the Speed Game saying "x more minutes until erased" or something like that would be very nice. That way people who have already joined and people who may want to join know the amount of time left to join, and either will re-create on erase (in the former case), or join instead of dawdling (latter case).

I agree that the 15 minute rule could be scrapped but having a indefinate time period with no maximum time i think would be a mistake. I take the point on board that the longer games need longer but the penalties of feedback and points loss would need to be inforced to stop people doing it.

Speed Games

Postby ratkins76 on Fri Feb 01, 2008 8:19 am

What I'd like to do is be able to have longer speed games. i.e. maybe 1 hour per move. Or better yet user set times per go (5 mins as default).

There are games I want to play inside a day, but can't commit to a frantic 5 mins per go session.

gotta agree with lack on this one, scrap the time limit all together, I've gotta hope people are aware enough to realize, weather or not their gonna have time for a speed game or if they really wanna play it, I wasn't aware before this that there was a time limit, but don't really like it now i'm hearing about it

that would be so incredible annoying, having to sit there for an hour waitng for your opponent to go, and then if there were more it'd just be a mess, someone deadeats and the game literally takes all day or longer

I was about to suggest a "Drop if you logout" code change but I see you have that angle covered...

sfhbballnut - I understand where you're coming from, what I meant is that we have another speed game option: 5 min goes, 1 hr goes, 24hr goes (or user defined delays up to 24 hrs).

If you don't want to play 1hr go games, then don't sign up for them. I'm not suggesting dropping the 5 min games. But not everyone can play games at that pace (be it work or whatever), but want something that is quicker than the 24 hour games where deadbeats really do slow things down to an absolute crawl!

I support this extremely, I don't like the speed game time limit.

allowing players to set a limit or giving them bigger limits other than 10 mins (15 mins is too much even) is just opening a can of worms

within a day you will hear complaints from people who got suckered because their opponent took the full hour to take their turn so you just left and missed a turn. even 10 mins is kind of too much because one player can drag out a game to over an hour even though you only played 6 turns.

what im trying to say is there will be players who take full advantage of the clock as a strategy and as a consequence there will be players who will take full advantage of their voices to complain

I'm in favor of removing the time limit.

Maybe you can auto-kick first turn deadbeats in speed games?

Rich

5 minute turns you know it will be quick.
24 hour turns you know you only have to log in once a day.

1 hour goes might be popular to start with but then people will go to bed and deadbeat. with the lost points and rank from those games they will eventually only get created/joined by noobs.

that may create unintentional deadbeat(ing)

As in the case of a power outage.
