spam filter

Postby joeyjordison on Tue May 08, 2007 10:22 am

Have a spam post filter. See below for how it would work

Ok many people who spam are self proffessed spammers and freely admit that their posts are spam. Therefore when creating a post there should be a little tick box that you tick if its a spam message. Now this might just not work and you will always get the people who don't use it to be annoying but if you use the tick box then spamming is allowed. Each person can then turn on or off their spam filter and it either hides or shows spam posts....

Obvious why it is needed, spamming gets annoying and mods every now and then have to crack down on it.

Feedback would be appreciated. As i said it might just not work but if some spammers could give feedback in non spam form then that would be helpful.

I don't know how well it would work, but it is a very interesting idea... I would like to just see people get banned for excessive spamming, personally.

Well since tickboxes don't work to deter multiple accounts or innappropriate feedbacks, I doubt it would work here. But in the rare chance this does get implemented, we could just set it to automatically delete anything denoted as spam. Ya, that'll work real well.

There is a Greasemonkey script you can use to block user's posts from being seen by you. That way you won't be bugged by spam.

personally spam doesn't annoy me too much and i think in moderation its fine, sometimes even slightly amusing. some people really hate it though.

anyway to improve the suggestion a bit maybe it wouldn't be a spam tick box but would be like an optional post viewer. Posts that everyone reading the topic will want to see can stay normal and other sidenotes, insults, spam and anything off the subject a bit would be under the filter.

but you are probably rite wicked. tickboxes aren't exactly a barrier against rulebreaking.

Plus they are subject to massive amounts of abuse. "I don't like so-and-so at all, so I'm gonna mark all of his posts as spam!"

i think you are misunderstanding me, that is unless i am misunderstanding u :?

the box could only be ticked by the poster (or a mod but i wouldn't expect them to go through ticking all spam comments

but some don't appreciate it so rather than have them complaining wouldn't it be beneficial to all to just let those who appreciate it see it?

If you don't like spam, then you don't have to read it. Nobody's forcing you. Your idea makes no sense at all. Almost nobody is going to check the tickbox and it's a forum issue anyway and Lack has already said he doesn't want to hack the forum code.

So very true. The tickbox for the feedback doesn't exactly make me go, "OMG, I shouldn't call this asshole a fucking wanker (or something similar) because there's that very intimidating tickbox right below what I'm writing."

2. it does make sense. everyone else has pretty much understood it

3. i explained that it would depend on its reception whether or not it works

4. i never knew lack didn't want to 'hack the forum code' because i have no idea what that means and never saw him say it.

The forum is run with a code called phpBB. lack didn't write this. Because he didn't write this, he really doesn't know what will happen if he messes with it, and it could very well crash the forum if he does.
