[Suggestion] Forum changes

Postby alster on Thu Apr 05, 2007 6:17 am

I’d like to put my two cents down here and suggest a few things.

Suggestion 1.

I’m starting to find that all this political and religious nonsense on the forums are beginning to be too much. Why does people find this urge to discuss these things over and over again (and not uncommonly in a rude manner)?

Perhaps one could implement a general ban on politics and religion in the common forums (most notably the flame forum and the social lounge). Instead, one could set up a special Politics sub-forum for people to sign on to if they wish to discuss these things on CC. Now, these discussions all over the place just cause resentment among a lot of players. And that’s not what CC is about I think, we have enough fights over tactics, morals and in game chats.

Me, I’m tired about whinging Europeans bashing the Land of the Free and the current leader of the Free world. I’m tired about American bastards complaining about the weakness and ridiculous ways of Europe. I’m tired about Muslims hating gays and Jews (and freedom in general). I’m tired about smart-ass liberals sitting on their high horses complaining about pretty much anything. Jez… Just play CC for crying out loud.

Such a particular forum would be a very conscious choice to enter into, no one can complain afterwards. And, such forum could be very little moderated. Guess the only issue would be the law applicable to CC. Guess, if the servers are located in Canada, Canadian law would have to be respected. For example, incitement for jihad or other terrorism would be outlawed.

Suggestion 2.
The drawback with this would be that the regular forums would need more moderation, i.e. that the mods would have to refer threads and posts from the regular forums to this particular political sub-forum. And more work is no good. After all, the mods are doing their job unpaid in order to create a nicer CC community. However, I’m a Hattrick-player, and this no-politics rule is working well there. After a while, people know the boundaries and do this kind of debating in closed forums they sign up to.

A way to easen up on the workload for the mods would be to get rid of this stupid feedback system. It’s ridiculous and obviously creates a lot of work for Wicked (I’m sure she rather play some games instead of doing all that shit). Now, people leave feedback left and right. Ridiculous feedback that the ignore list is a perfectly good tool to handle. You don’t like the way a person acts or chats? You find him rude when cursing? Just click ignore and you won’t have to see his chats and you won’t see him in your games anymore. Why battle it out in feedback as well? And write threads about language, click ignore damn it and get over it. Besides, even more annoying are the people fishing for positive feedback. Leaving weird-ass positive feedback then pm’ing you to return the favour. Get a life people.

Suggestion 3.
Also. Why are people using pictures in their signatures and posting pics all over the forums. It’s usually very unnecessary. And it takes up hard drive space. Just get rid of this and a lot of space will not be taken up by jpeg’s. After all, CC are soon running on its 400.000 game. A lot of games being saved, a lot of players being saved. And the forums, there are quite a few threads being saved. Just get rid of the pictures, and I’m sure that space could be used to increase peoples’ inboxes or something.

And, it’s annoying when using public or semi-public computers (at school, at work etc.). With all these pictures, I’m afraid to open up forum threads because I never know what may be posted there.

But this is just my two (annoyed) cents…

what you have said is all very fair, however the social forum is just for general topics, and clearly politics is important to alot of people so i would not go along with banning it.

the feedback system? i think although its alot of work it is necessary, maybe it could be altered to make it easier on the mods, or add more mods?

the pictures though, that bugs the hell outta me as well, i could deal with banning them.

i also think we should ban offensive language in all forums except flame wars, as theres a time and a place, and that is the flame wars, not anywhere else.

I'm not suggesting banning it. Just giving it a forum of its own.

Agree 100%. A ban of all religious topics would be fine with me. Go to church if you want to talk about your mighty religion.

Suggestion 1-good

Make a debates forum. Won't require much moderation aside from moving the occasional thread. I'm also tired of reading alstergren's we've paving the way to a better world by killing everybody propoganda in flame wars. :P I go to flame wars to find out what my mother has been up to last night, not to hear someone extolling the virtues of capitalism.

Suggestion 2-bad
Don't get rid of feedback system, it serves it's function. Feedback isn't for ones own personal use, such as the ignore list, but rather for telling other people what you think. Plus it makes good reading.

Suggestion 3-good in part

Ban pics in sigs, if you want, though it probably won't be a popular choice, but not in the forum, with a ban on pics we'd never have seen such classics as mud hut risk, or the post a pic of yourself thread. Anyway the pics are hosted offsite so it's not putting any more strain on the CC server than a line of text... I think.

A max size limits on sigs might be appropriate.

Forum changes

Postby luns101 on Thu Apr 05, 2007 2:18 pm

I've read the suggestions and offer up something I've been thinking about as well:

Just as premium members are allowed to make private games that they can password-protect in order to only allow people that they want into their games, perhaps the same thing could be done with the forums.

Premium members could password-protect their threads and only allow those individuals into it with whom they wish to discuss topics. In this way, the "threadjacking" which is so common here, would go away for the most part. I personally would like to see this available to everyone, even the "free" members, but it would probably be better used as an incentive for people to become premium.

We're looking into sub forums, which will cover most if not all this.
