Exclude Maps from Game Finder Results

Concise description:
In the Game Finder, it would be easier to exclude maps from results individually, rather than select a large set in the Search form.

Specifics/Details:
I tend to play the same maps over and over. When I search in the Game Finder, if I choose multiple maps for the results, I have to manually click the same 35 or so maps so that I don't see results I'm not interested in. Problem is, it takes too much time, and I'm lazy. So I make no selection, and my search shows results with all maps included. I then scroll down the pages and visually scan for the maps I want to play. Often, I find 25 games in a row of Feudal War, another 15 of Das Schloss, 20 of City Mogul, etc. These being maps I'm not interested in, I have to scroll and scroll to get past them.

What would be wonderful is if right next to the map thumbnail there was a link that says "Exclude", which upon clicking would filter that map out of my search. Or, even better, two links: one that says "Exclude from this search" and the other "Exclude from all searches". This could, of course, be reversible by showing which maps are currently excluded in the Game Finder, with a link to "Include". Without these maps in the results, 9 pages of possible games to peruse could become 4 or 5.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Gives users more control over the search results
  • Makes searching for games faster

I think this would be limited by the forum structure and it's ability to resubmit forms to the database over and over. I am uncertain of how its structured.

Something that might help with this for you is the "Saved Search" functionality that can be added under Firefox and Greasemonkey. Do you currently use Firefox or a different web-browser?

This solution would be the easiest and most practical for the time being. However I'll leave the thread here if anyone has anything else to add.

Is encouraging people to limit maps more really a good idea? As a greasemonkey add-on, fine, but to encorporate it within CC seems rather counter to CC goals of having people play many maps.

I think you're misunderstanding the suggestion. He wants there to be a select box like the one we currently use for maps, except this one will be "Not this map", IE if I selected Classic on the "Not this map" box, it would show all games with applicable settings, except those on the Classic map.

Yes, I understood that. The things is when people can avoid looking at specific maps, they are less likely to even try other maps. A subtle thing, but still... why encourage the limitations?

In a related note, I DO think we need a better classification system for maps. I have talked about that for a long time, even did up my own categories wich a lot of people liked. However, then I went freemium and then inactive and now cannot find it even. That would help here.

It's NOT necessarily a limitation. For instance, if I despise the AOR maps, with this I could select those three AOR maps as "exclusions" and have all of the games but those three come up. That's not limiting at all.

In fact, I would suggest that the current setup is MORE limiting. I can select just the three AOR maps and only see those games. That's far more limiting than the exclusionary option.

I see your point. I would like to be able to select more than one map at a time. the bit that got me was the 'exclusion" bit. Because, well, a lot of people do just avoid any of the non-standard maps.

This makes sense, seems like a good option, is it doable, lackattack?

Just to clarify, I don't use the saved search option because I want to try different maps from time to time, and I want to see new maps in the results as they become available. And I don't want to exclude the maps at the Game Finder form, but rather in the search results.

I can see that.

I guess I would recommend that you set up the Saved Search anyway, and use that as your primary gaming selection. And then, from time to time, when you're curious abotu new or different maps, do a Join A Game selection.
