Auto select spoils card sets

Postby Halmir on Sat Jan 01, 2011 7:02 pm

Concise description:
  • It's not a big thing but every time you decide to cash in a set of cards, it's 3 clicks to select then the 4th to cash them in. With me, occasionally I mis-click so have to reselect it all again. Now think about how many times a day or week u cash cards in, multiply that up across a year, and you're doing all this clicking thousands of times a year!

Specifics/Details:
  • My suggestion is to auto select the set of spoils that makes a set, so u can just go straight to the Cash In. You'd still have the "Later" button to decide not to take them. This idea would also auto-select the set of cards that would give you the most troops - whilst cashing in a lower amount might be an option that some would take, I've never considered it in 2000+ games! Again u would be able to untick and choose whatever ones you want if u really don't want the best set

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • This would automate something that is pointlessly time-consuming.

How would it work in an escalating game? You have five cards 3 red 1 green 1 blue. You own the countries that match all the cards. How would you suggestion work?

Nukes games: yep fair enough this should be disabled as it's obviously crucial to avoid self-nuking (doh! didn't think of that as I rarely play them).

Escalating games: If you had 5 cards with several ways of playing them then this could suggest a set to play, or list each possible way of cashing them in - or like Nukes, just don't have it for those game types.

I'm guessing that whilst some players on here love the two game types above and play nothing else, they'd be the exception. Without a shred of data to back it up :) I'd suggest that 80-90% of games played on here with spoils would be standard? Lots anyway :-) and this is where it helps out.

So lets go with flat rate. You have 3 blue, 1 red and 1 green. You own the three blue countries which set would the auto select choose? The 3 blues would get you 14 troops and the rainbow set would only get you 12 but the rainbow set puts the +2 on a country that they could be used right away and the blue set are all out of the action. Which set would auto select choose?

I don't really see any benefit to this suggestion.

These are exactly the sort of problems I'm seeing with this. Personally, I would far prefer to make these selections myself.

I'll concede that this doesn't automatically deliver the best results every time - there may be your desire to launch an attack from a specific country using that +2 territory bonus - but the circumstances you suggest are going to be pretty rare unless you play a lot of 2 player on small maps. Almost every time the default RGB set is going to be your best option. My suggestion is to just tick these automatically, not tick and cash them in straight away. If you didn't like the ticked selection you'd always be free to choose a different one. Have a look at the next ten times you cash in a set, would it really make a difference to your cause not to choose the RGB set every time?

your suggestion is for spoils

but not nuclear,
or many escalating,
or some flat rate
& it is yet to be discussed but unlikely to apply to any new spoils that may be implemented such as zombie, double trouble, poker, etc

this suggestion really doesn't have a broad enough appeal, imo

It doesn't make any sense to implement this. Not only for reasons everyone has mentioned,
but also because of others. Such as:

You have Australia in classic, red red blue blue green.
R1 spoils is in SA, the other is on Bangkok. You own neither it'll treat these as the same. Obviously you will soon own Bangkok, and the preference would b to get rid of SA red spoils.
How would you code that?
And then if they did find a way to figure in distance, but one path has every tert w 3 troop and another further away with 1's all the way how's it going to decide?

This would be an awful addition, slow down for 1 sec so u don't make the mistake and have to waste 3 secs redoing it.

My $0.02
