speeding up speed games

Concise description:
  • In speed games instead of having a straight 5 mins per turn. give each player 30 seconds to start their turn then 5 minutes starting from when they click the "begin turn" button

Specifics/Details:
  • When it's your turn the "begin turn" button appears as usual
  • You've got 30 seconds to press "begin turn" otherwise you've missed your go.
  • once you've pressed "begin turn" you've got 5 minutes to take your turn as normal

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • No longer a problem - When some one deadbeats, it currently takes 15 minutes for them to get kicked out which is very annoying for those left in.
  • Start of speed games are often quite slow with some players not really paying attention to the game. this will force players to take turns promptly and thus speed the game up.

A lot of players have multiple speed games at once and I personally completely space out when it's not my turn so it takes me like at least a minute to realize it's my turn.

Yeah, but you're relaly annoying to play speed games against, AOG. I mean, I love you and all, but this suggestion would make premiums pay attention...and would make speed games truly "speed."

you do realize that if it takes 15 minutes for them to deadbeat the game was going to take way more than 15 minutes to actually play? Also i fail to see how this belongs in a casual gaming site...

So say someone has a Speed Freestyle up. Something draws their attention away from the computer for a minute or two. They come back, and they missed the first turn. I really don't like this idea.

This doesn't seem to be relevant to the suggestion.

This will only apply to speed games not casual games. Speed games aren't casual, casual games are.

good point, hadn't thought about freestyle. Maybe it would only work on seq games.

Can see your point that playing many games at once would be difficult.

If by some miracle this change was ever implemented then maybe you wouldn't need to play some many games at one time as you could player fewer games more quickly?

It is completely relevant to the suggestion...you cant say deadbeat games take too long because simply they take less time then a game vs an actual person you are playing against.

Casual gaming site is used in the description of conquer club not casual games. This is for people who want to take a break from their day to play risk and under your suggestion you have 30 seconds to begin your turn or miss. That would completely ruin speed games and make this not for the casual gamer but for the person who sits there waiting for their turn. Also it would make it a viable strategy to try to get your opponent to miss turns by various means. Furthermore it would kill the idea of playing multiple speed games at one time...something people do to not sit there waiting for opponent's to make their moves. Basically this idea makes you commit that the entire time you are playing a speed game you cant walk away from the computer which is not what this site is about. If you really want to make speed games faster support shorter round times which would actually make them faster and not force people to click begin turn in a short amount of time.

If truly casual then axe the point system, ranking system, and rating system. Oh, you can nix the mods that attempt to control behavior as well.

Well as for the first 3 most people find those to be helpful additions to the site...this would not be welcome by almost players who play speed games. Also thanks for the snide comment about me being a mod trying to control people but the simple fact is that i am voicing my opinions on a suggestion which i feel would kill speed games.

What's that supposed to mean? You've gone from the irrelevant to the nonsensical.

Anyway I'm giving up on this thread. it's obviously not going anywhere.

Its not that hard to figure out...deadbeats dont make 1 vs 1 games take longer, from what i gather those are the speed games you play. If you cant kill someone before they deadbeat then it would have taken way longer to finish the game than if they were playing...simply because you can get bonuses without them going...they dont get extra troops every round and you can break their bonuses if they have any. Thus dead-beating does not slow down games, unless its a large player sequential game...then it does a little.

And yeah maybe this suggestion is not going anywhere because it does more harm than good to the majority of people on this site and creates a less casual gaming experience...something that conquer club identifies itself as.

The comment wasn't directed at you. Casual and competitive point system do not go together. You were trying to claim that the whole of the site is casual. It is not. Casual and ranking do not go together. Casual and moderators do not go together. OF the games I play on other sites, the ones without moderators are more casual than this site. This is an intensely competitive site where moderators respond to cheating and abuse complaints, moderators also respond to suggestions to improve the site. Improvements are hardly casual. I think the only moderators on the site who would be considered casual would be the ones who deal with bugs. You have to fix pretty much any game that breaks, so those folks would exist no matter if the site was casual or not. Everyone else is here because this is an intensely noncasual competitive site.

You're arguing semantics. It's a casual gaming site in the sense that in order to win you can spend 5 minutes a day or 10 hrs. and you can still have fun. Win, lose. conquer. My point is, this topic is getting derailed. It is around to talk about speeding up speed games. Not why they should speed them up, nor the definitions of casual gaming. please lets try and get it back on topic:)

Speed games as a whole do not need a speed up...many people like them the way they are. What we need is an option for faster speed games, like shorter round times or something like that so that everyone can have it they way they want.

Your argument does not have merit. Simply because there are some player who like speed games "the way they are" does not mean that we should not have options to play "faster" speed games. Before speed games on conquerclub, I imagine someone suggested, hey, lack, can we play a game where the round lasts 5 minutes? Luckily there weren't mods around at that time who said, "many people like the games the way they are." This site needs a refresher course in refreshing.

If you're a user with ADD (like me) and happen to see something shiny or spend a couple of minutes dicking around in the forums, then you will miss turns and deadbeat quicker than if you realized you forgot about your turn then returned to your games to play. I don't think this would be beneficial to the site.

Simply having shorter turn times would work at the beginning of the game however towards the end of the game there often isn't enough time to finish your turn, especially on larger maps. Therefore simply having shorter turn times wouldn't be a great idea.

I'm not saying that speed games don't work, I too am happpy with the way they are just think they could be even better.
