That would be nice, but I suggest something slightly different - which will only apply to those actually playing the map:

A few days before the update, re-upload the map image file with a graphical note on the map itself - "Warning, AA will reset to neutral beginning on the 12th etc" or words to that effect.

Sure, you can keep an eye on the development thread and play these maps at your own risk, but I'd be pretty pissed if I just lost 84 troops without warning.
"Suck it up Cupcake".

That is not for you, but for the poor volunteers, that seem to care more for themselves, than the community. :(

But seriously, how the the hell would a notification of upcoming changes, be non-beneficial for any "volunteers" ?

yeah. the solution can be a simple small piece of pgramming. like "if : beta will be change , Then deliver message to "find active games Beta map"" but in the programming language used. Or, as ManBungalow stated before, an amend in the map warning. Not a big deal, only to be nice and doing the things right

Sorry, but i'm the only one that think that an answer about this topic was given after only 4 posts?

AndyDufresne wrote:While a PM is probably not feasible, Lackattack is looking at various 'Smart Messages' for the Game Screen. I'll look into the feasibility of including an automated message to display on the Game Screen (with the map, where you take your turn), that could be generated saying that the map has received a Beta Update, and possibly with a link to the discussion topic in the Foundry.

All of the above is speculation, but I'll look into it.

If we're talking about a possible in game message i can say that i like the idea, but if we're talking about changing how the Beta system works, or adding a waiting time, etc; then i must say that the Beta system works exactly how it has to work (without considering that those argumentations seem to me a bit off topic)

I am in agreement with the in-game message, but it would be useless without a waiting period, that allows ALL of the players, to take the appropriate steps, to combat any harmful outcomes that the changes might inflict. What is so "off topic" about that ?

The only proposed con that I see so far, is that it would slow down the process a little. Boo fricking hoo. :( Suck it up Cupcakes. Maybe it should be slowed down, then the stupid mistakes might be caught. ...BEFORE they are implemented. ;) :P

It isn't useless if the message is only something like " the map was updated --> Changes: this, that, etc......"
I don't want you misunderstood my words, i don't mean your idea is bad, but that your idea is something complitely different from what was suggested.
You're asking not to add a small text when the map is updated but to create a new small process into the process:
Have a small message means that we could ask to the mapmaker to compile a short list of the changes and send it to Lack with the new files, when Lack upload the new files he could add the changes in a field and upload everything.Done!
Have a waiting time instead means to have a perfect planned schedule - Send the file to Lack, then he needs to add the warning and then upload the map exactly after X hours.
As you can see this is something more tricky to manage and it isn't feasible right now imo.
As said your idea isn't bad and I see the good intention in posting it, but Halmir suggestion could be the first step, yours is the second or the third... ;)

What I meant by the word "useless" is this-

If the message is posted at the same time as the change, then how on earth is that very useful ? I guess that it would be useful in that, the guy that just had his armies wiped out by the sudden change, would know the reason why.

In my eyes, the message would serve a better purpose, if it was posted before the change is implemented. It would work much better as a warning sign, rather than an announcement after the fact. ;)

"Useless" ?
Maybe not,
but next to it.

On a side note, I just do not understand how a map can go through months of developing, and then slip through with major GP flaws. And, if the flaws are NOT so major, then why in the hell, is it so important that it must be changed right away, with zero warning to the testers that are helping us out ?

I can imagine someone whinging at losing a stack of troops when the rules changed. That sort of change could potentially affect the outcome of the game. If it's a major change like that (and let's face it everyone wants to hold that gun) a turn's notice would have been polite.

What would have really hacked me off though was if I'd taken my turn after the change had happened, someone else had taken the AA gun, then I'd taken it with a huge stack thinking "whooopee now it's my time to bombard everyone!". Which, sadly, is what happened I think. :-s

A suggested solution:- score all Beta games as normal UNTIL a change is deemed necessary. Then, depending on how minor or major it is, reduce the amount of points lost or won for everyone by a percentage. You foundry dudes could vote on how major a change is as u are probly best placed to assess the impact :-)

To continue the example, I take the desired AA gun, lose a huge stack due to a gameplay change - but hey the game has undergone a major change so is now only worth 50% of the points - I won't be as upset :)

Giving a quick way for the players to see what was changed, nothing else.
As MrBenn as explained previously, the Beta system was created exactly to apply the necessary changes without "lock" the map and wait that everyone has finished the games. When you play a Beta map, you know that it could change. It doesn't count if the changes are minor or not. A change always affects the progress of the game, in any case. The first golden rule in a game is that the rules must not change untill the game is finished, in any other case someone will ever take an advantage from the changes. It doesn't count if it applies in a second, in 3 turns or in 192 hours, because during a game you have a mix of the original gameplay scheme that the mapmaker had in his mind and your personal vision of the map. It's not possible to know all the possible outcomes and if no one will take an advantage. Change a game is always unfair! The only problem is that the change makes you angry because you lost your troops and i understand you. But it's exactly the written-risk of playing a Beta map!
When you play a Beta map you are like an extreme snowboarder. You find a great mountain and there's a perfect weather, you have the best board and you wear the best equipment of the world....but there's a sign: danger avalanches. Now, maybe you can ride anyway the mountain, no one can say to you if the avalanche will be at that moment or not, but it's at your own risk. If you don't want to risk, then go on a safe track. In the same way if you play a Beta map you know that something could change, it's again at your on risk. Only the brave! ;)
Moreover we don't have only a written warning on the site but we also warn again the user that something is gonna change, because MrBenn always post when he sends the files to Lack, you need only to check the map thread. (something that i'd would suggest if you play on a Beta map)
The only fair system that i see to prevent mid game changes is to apply the changes only to the new games and don't touch the ongoing ones. To do this we need to upload the map with different name for images and xml and in the same time lock the old one to be sure that no one starts a new game. But this is another suggestion and is complitely different from what was suggested (And i must say that probably it could creates a large process to follow that looks more a work than a volunteer thing).
But coming back to the in-game message, i can say that the message is not useful to prevent you to lose your troops, but it's a great userfriendly addition, giving a visual explanation of what was changed. This is the only way i can see this implemented for now.

I don't have an answer for this....but it happens with everything in life. You don't know it untill you do it! Said that,i think that major GP flaws could happen only with complex (or complicated) maps and it's a rare event anyway.

Your solution about only changing the new games, and leaving the ones already in progress alone, is a fair way to go IMHO. Graphic changes are OK, but GP changes once a game has started is for the birds. And is NOT fair, any way you look at it.

Also if you make a quick and hasty change, you run the risk of other unforeseen consequences. That is another very good reason to have a waiting period to implement any changes. 8-)

I think that this has to be the way to go; freeze changes to all live games but change the map to a version 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 etc for new games, if the gameplay is to be altered. Potentially, we could even end up with several versions of the same map with different GP features - great fun after a few beers :D !!
