Special Dice

Postby pascalleke on Sat Jul 02, 2011 11:41 am

Concise description:
  • Special Dice

Specifics/Details:
  • As it seems for me and many others i have spoken in the last few years those special dice ( christmas snowflake dice, Football Dice) give many people just a load of crappy dice, and heck i dont even like the most of them ( very ugly dice if u ask me :-$ ) , I was wondering if it was not possible to just keep my regular dice and only give them to the people who play on those special games ? Or make a new settings on our profile that we could choose ourselves to have them or not

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • 1st not giving many people the hating CC feeling for having again a bad streak dice wenn those special dice are issued and 2nd not ruin the beautiful colours of this wonderful nice site with those ugly special dice colours ;)

Sorry, this isn't going to happen. The images displayed have absolutely zero effect on the results you actually get. The only way this could be considered reasonable is because you just don't like the new colors, but that's not enough to justify the work to put this feature in place.

I'm sorry, but i find the soccer dice incredibly difficult to read what the actual numbers are. Unlike the colors of players which have a (y: IcePack) option, the dice do not.

They really still need to be readable.

+1 for this suggestion.

Uh, why do you need to read what the numbers are anyway? Isn't it only the results that matter?

I'm not saying the dice should be impossible to read, but you can actually read those if you're looking.

So you're saying we don't need to see the dice rolls? Then why have them even show up in the first place?

Yes, they NEED to be legible. I can't hardly read the soccer dice, its actually extremely frustrating.

If they dont need to be readable, get them off the screen completely and just tell us the results then? Hm?
That will never fly.

I would actually be fine with that. Dice complainers will complain no matter what; the rest of us are rational and recognize that the dice are fair. The Dice Stats feature should prove that to any remaining doubters.

The Intensity Cubes are only there to make the game feel more realistic, as if you were perhaps rolling dice in a real game, but pragmatically it makes no difference whether they show up or not. It's a nice touch, sure, and the different ones corresponding to various holidays make the site feel more like a community.

At any rate, the World Cup dice are entirely legible.

That is a matter of opinion, I'm sure myself and others would have something entirely different to say. (color blind?)

If knowing what the numbers are is really so important to you, create a suggestion to have an alt text for each Intensity Cube with the number on that cube. That would be much easier to implement than a system where everyone can opt out of the different images.

I'm choosing to support this suggestion. You're opposed. I think we've both made our points. I don't need to make another suggestion, when I support this one.

You do need to make another suggestion if this is important to you, because I'm pretty sure there will never be enough support for this to be implemented. Creating the suggestion I recommended will at least get you some of what you want, instead of none of it. I'm just telling you how it is, man. If you choose not to take my advice, that's your prerogative, but as a moderator here I want to at least give it to you.

I am not opposed to the idea of being able to opt out of the special dice, by the way; I'm just opposed to it taking priority over any number of more important actual features for the site.

I dont like some of these special dice. More like a community? I dont really see how- all youre doing is reminding CC players that an event or holiday is near. I support the Opting out that is suggested in the original post and i would go a little futher to suggest customizable dice for CC players.

Classic white dice
Black and red dice
Any of these special dice
maybe even let you choose the colors

Im not at all a computer or HTML code expert. I have taken a class on it but it only got to me to partially understanding HTML coding so i can be wrong on this next point. But isnt all you have to do is fine the coding for the dice and change a few things. I mean a ton of sites have customizable things to them way more in depth then 2 colors on dice- so it cant be too hard, can it? Again im no expert in this matter if im wrong then just say so.

The current method is that the dice are stored as images and called from the server. It would not be possible currently to have user customization of the server's images. I suppose it could be changed so that all of the image creation is done client-side, but that would be a bit of work.

If this suggestion were implemented, there isn't much reason why a user couldn't choose from a range of different images. It's only the initial step of customizing image choice for each user that would be the difficult task.

Im sure there are countless amount of CC members who know how to build and customize websites who are willing to help implement some of these suggestions for free. If that is a problem. As you said in another thread there is only one person who is implementing suggestions perhaps we can make that two?

We all want another developer, but the webmaster seems to be rather picky with who he entrusts the website development to. A few of the tech contributors here have helped with site development but this is a larger scale project, I believe. Until another developer is hired most of the suggestions will take a while to implement. Sorry, I know that is not what you want to hear.

intresting, so all the people who claim that they have bad dice streaks , especially wenn those special dice are in order are just all paranoid ...ok i can deal with that . ;) But i believe there are many people who just dont like them, maybee a majority ? We all have our own reasons not to like them so that is not important ...So i think i got a point here ... ;) I believe in the power of free choice even on those lil silly things like unclear ugly special dice ...yeah i love just my plain old simpel dice ....shoot me :D

While I agree with this statement to the degree that's the way it SHOULD be...wasn't there some problem with the implementation of one of the new sets of dice (I'm thinking it was the soccer ones, but I could be mistaken) that caused them to be "not what we would normally get"? Or am I misremembering that?

That was the image of the dice being backwards. The results would have ended up the same if they were the normal dice, just the images were backwards. 1=6, 2=5, 3=4, 4=3, 5=2, 6=1.

just imagine the results if one player had the special dice and the other player was rolling normal imaged dice...im thinking this would have made a void set

Ah, ok. I knew I remembered something along the line of a problem, but couldn't remember what it was. By the same token, doesn't that show that it's really MORE than "just a different picture"?

No. The mechanics of the game did not change at all. The situation would have remained totally the same if the site never showed dice roll results. The only weird part was that people didn't think that the game results matched up with what they saw on the pictures.

I don't see any harm in letting people customize what the dice look like to them, so I support this suggestion. There might even be a GM script for it already, buried somewhere in the archives, it shouldn't be very hard to implement.

Having a simple 'off' button for the oddly-colored dice would be wonderful. I'm colorblind, and the contrast on some of the special dice really do suck. some of my RL friends stop playing multiple games (or stop playing all together) when the 'special' dice come up.

two options I could see working:
1: having text underneath the dice that show what is shown on the dice; OR
2: having a 'disable special dice' selection in your control panel.

I had seen this topic a month or so ago, then lost track of it and never got to post.
