View how many territories a map has when you click on it

Postby PsyDev on Sat Jan 29, 2011 11:58 am

Concise description:
View how many territories a map has when you click on it
[*]xxxxxxx
Specifics/Details:
When you're searching for games in the Game Finder and you click on a map, it should display in the bottom how many territories the map contains.
It should perhaps also give the number of armies you will start out with for the number of players the game has.
[*]xxxxxxx
How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
Basically I just like the convenience of knowing how big a map is before I play it, to give me more information.
When you are looking to join a game, you want to have an idea of how appropriate the game is for the number of players. Some maps have ~60 territories, so it would be OK for an 8 player game, but maybe too small for your taste for 4 players. Some maps are very small and maybe you won't want to play an 8-player game with it. It depends on personal preference, but having this information would be useful.

Agree it would be useful don't know how hard it would be to code though. Because it would need to change for every map depending on settings...singles/dubs/trips/quads and number of players. So ten start region count etc. per map

The first part is easy to code, just state how many territories there are. That is all I really need.

The second part might require more coding:
Divide the # of territories by the number of players. For maps with custom settings, where there are neutral territories to start, you would have to take that into account.

Another possible benefit is that it would tell you how many neutral territories there will be at the start of the game (the remainder after the division).

Just stating how many regions on a map shouldn't be difficult.

but until they code it, check the table chipv tries to update for every released map

http://chipv.freehostia.com/

Now, this table will NOT tell you how many regions per player; but if you think you're interested in a map, do a gamefinder for a complete game with the number of players you're considering, open the game, click to load the entire log, and see what each player had for first turn.

To figure out how many neuts that left, the data in chip's table less the regions you see on each player's first turns = number regions.

Alternatively, for maps with RELEASED strategy guides, most of the guides are providing that information for you (see strategy forum)

I am looking for a quick way to browse as i am starting a game. I want to select a map depending on what kind of game I'm starting. For a 2vs2 map, I want a bigger map, for 3vs3, a bigger map is good. I would like to just know how many territories thare are in the map. No fancier features are needed (e.g. neutrals, etc.). Should be *quite* easy to code this basic functionality.

I don't see why this is rejected. Shouldn't there at least be an explanation for that?

There was a mass purge of dead topics a couple months back. If you would still like to push for this topic, I can move it back to the main forum.

I think this is a good suggestion and warrants further discussion personally.

Topics are simply sent to the archives when they fall down the post list too far. Since you've bumped this, I'll move it back to Suggestions. It will remain there if the discussion picks up.

I would love to see some sort of table with the # of starting territories for each player based on # of players in the game. This can't always be determined by territory count on the map. For instance, on most 42-territory maps, 1v1 games start with 14 territories each. However, Holy Roman Empire starts with 15 each and Castle Lands starts with 13 each. There's no way to know the difference without doing a Game Finder search on every map with every player count.

I would suggest a stickied topic somewhere in the Map Foundry, updated with each new quenched map. After the initial table is made with the current 181 maps, updating for each new map would would take very little time. Also, this would require zero coding, so it might actually be implemented. I'll even volunteer to help out if needed. (Of course, if there's a quick way to find these numbers by parsing the XML, that would be ideal.)

Not a bad idea, to be sure. I think I'd use it more for curiosity's sake, though.

As part of 'Map Info Pages' which will be included in the next big update with 2 or 3 other items, there will be a lot more information about maps in a publicly accessible database. Some of the content will include region count, coded neutrals, starting positions, bombardments, killer neutrals, objectives, in addition to some other non-specially game related information like a blurb and a link to the map development topic.

Ditto. I can see many instances when an easily-accessed table would be a big help in planning tournaments, for instance when trying to do something where different groups play on different maps, but you want all the groups to have a roughly-equivalent experience.
