"[*]Add a daily contest which awards a special medal to the player who wins the most games on that map over a seven day period that starts on the day that the map is map-of-the-day."
I added it to the original post.
I like it...but is a week long enough? I only mention this because most of my games last far longer than a week. This would be great for the "speed" and the "1-vs-1" guys, but not really anyone else. But I do like where you're going with it.
I think a week is probably the maximum. Any games started within the contest days would be allowed to be finished to count towards the "prize." There would be an issue for freemiums to get enough competition. Maybe the "victor" could be based on win percentage over the time period (with a minimum of 4 total games played)? It would probably need to be considering some players could easily roll off hundreds of speed games and even the best rt freemiums wouldn't be able to hit those numbers no matter what the time period is for the contest. Then considering the opportunity for a tie, there would need to be some kind of tournament unless the powers-that-be would allow multiple awards to be given. (I think they would, given how many were given out for Whack-A-Mod.)

That way (thanks to the month-long play the previous map would have received), it's highly likely to be a different map the next month. And even if it isn't, then some rule for "the same map can't show up in any one given year" or something like that could be part of it. And since it's aimed specifically at least-played maps, the fact that we'd only see 12 per year wouldn't be as significant, since the idea is to get some time on those maps not played often.
The only problem I have with going more than one week is this: What if the map really does suck and that is why no one plays it? Then we're stuck with a month of play on "The Hive." (Incidentally, I like the Hive, I just don't have 4 hours of my life to devote to a speed game on that map and I probably wouldn't want to start even more than one casual game on it. While "least played" is certainly a goal, its probably not fair to the mapmakers and to the maps that, say, are 13th from the bottom of the list who have made maps that may be a lot better than others (that don't get played because they have some aspect of "terribleness" that warrants their presence at the bottom of the list. I would think that I could exclude the 50 most popular maps (if that truly represents a good group of maps that are ALL frequently played) and attempt to randomly pull from the remaining 112 maps. I'd probably need to exclude the betas as well as some of the ones newly released from beta. That would leave about 100 maps to choose from. Given the fact that some players play weekends only/weekdays only and other players log off and on rarely over the course of a month, perhaps a month is better. That being said, I would think there would need to be more than one "map-of-the-month" again, out of fairness to the mapmakers and to the maps chosen. The question would be...how many maps each month?
Woodruff wrote:In fact, if it's a "map of the month", then I would suggest that both your idea AND the idea of a tournament using it would work, since it wouldn't be nearly the level of work in that case. So then it's getting hit in two areas.
A tournament specific to the map would be something any TD could do, but there wouldn't be an additional bonus awarded, methinks. Perhaps it could be an "official" tournament for the map-of-the-month or a series of "map-of-the-month" tournaments that take place throughout the month. Something for the Tournametn Organizers Committee to consider. Then, separately, there would be an award for the player with the highest win percentage over the course of time on that map. (I recognize a potential for abuse there, though.)
