What would be the harm? Its not as though clans are looking to balloon their ranks with a bunch of inactive clan members. When last I was in a clan, there were posting requirements, and average rating requirements. Doubtful that this would become a back door for millions of, wait, thousands of, oh yeah, there are hundreds of freemiums out there! Even if those hundreds got an extra game slot "unfairly" a goodly percentage of them will probably
become active.
freemiums could just start up their own clan, accept 9 other freemiums, and magically have a fifth game. All they'd have to do would be post every week or so in the clan forum to keep it active
First of all, creating the clan is under some level of scrutiny, right? I cannot simply "start" a clan on a whim, right? If so, I've been missing out. I will start a clan as soon as I get confirmation.
Second of all, wouldn't it be nice to have more clans? Clans implies a participation level that is higher than that of the average member at CC. Someone up above mentioned the CLA...and that there are Clans that are better than others. Certainly, if some numbskull opens up a crappy clan and gets it past the mods and gets some idiots who are members to post, sure, they'd be a shitty clan. But everything here operates on a bell curve. There are going to be a few crappy clans. There are probably a few right now, I'm sure. I would think someone is in charge of eliminating those clans and usergroups that are functionless. I know I was a member of a usergroup that got the boot, it happens, so someone is out there monitoring it.
Third of all, once someone joins a clan, who is to say that member isn't going to go on to be more involved in the site, perhaps buy premium, maybe even apply for membership to an established clan? On day one here at CC there were how many clans? That's right, zero. So some idiot had to come up with the notion of a clan and start his own clan. The first few clans probably sucked at the beginning. There was and is a learning curve. At this point, with so many established clans, there probably isn't incentive to start a new clan, and I think this might help. Maybe there are 10-15 users out there that don't know each other and perhaps could come together (under the guise of wanting a 5th game slot) start a clan...then...*gasp*...figure out that the clan thing is pretty f-ing cool.
