Suggestion: Downloadable Sigs

Postby stahrgazer on Thu Oct 29, 2009 7:05 pm

Concise Description:
Change the CC profiles to allow sigs to be input from the computer (downloadable) or (as is now the only option) from a site online.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
1) Consistency with avatars and sigs; currently, avatars can be placed either from the member's computer or from a site (like photobucket).
2) Would enable the CC site and the person's information to stand alone, rather than require membership in and input from other sites or help from another user who has membership in other sites.

The nature of way signatures are stored do not allow for this. It'd be pretty difficult and time consuming and foolish to allow for this too. How many people are there on CC? And how much space would it take up if they all decided to upload a ~15kb image for their signature as you have? There are 369779 users, and if half of them uploaded that, it would only take up about 2 terabytes of space...

Then require them to be smaller. Why's it okay for avs to be uploaded and not sigs?

Tiny file size.

slowreactor, you think a couple hundred bucks spent on uploadable sigs is worth it? Really?

Unfortunately, it appears that I'm really bad at math, and have been getting terabytes confused with gigabytes. My apologies.

But, the fact remains that it would put an unnecessary load on CC's servers and would require many man hours to alter the forum code and database to allow for this. It just seems silly for something so trivial. How easy is it to go to one of the numerous image hosting sites, many of which don't require you to have an account, and upload an image yourself?

Again, if an image is "too many gigabytes" for CC, and the programming "too complicated," then why are Avatars uploadable?

What hosting sites don't require an account?

Off the top of my head, tinypic and imageshack.

CC is heavily integrated with it's forum. Your profile and your avatar and your inbox and all that fun stuff is all part of what's actually third party software (meaning lack didn't make it himself). They set it up so that the users can easily upload avatars. They didn't do that with signatures. So lack himself would have to go through and alter all the code in order to get that working, when it's really quite unnecessary.

Well, if you think about it, nothing on this site is "necessary" - it's all about enjoyment; many of us would enjoy being able to upload a sig from computer.

But it's time consuming and foolish... It doesn't improve the site in any noticeable way, will make the sight slower and more sluggish, will eat up a lot of lack-hours that could be spent doing something else that's actually fun so you don't have to take the 5 seconds to go to tinypic and upload it yourself.

If it's foolish, doesn't improve the site, or makes it sluggish, avatars wouldn't be uploadable.

The forum software was not created by lack. It runs on phpBB. phpBB allows for avatars to be uploaded but not sigs. lack did not have to go out of his way to make avatars uploadable as he would have to for sigs. The reason you can upload avatars but not sigs is that is just how phpBB. If you want to know why it is that way you would need to go to its website or something...

You can find the link on the bottom of any page on the forum.
