Best of 3/5/7 as a game type.

Postby karelpietertje on Sat May 02, 2009 7:51 am

Hello everybody,

The regular way of gaining and losing points is that the winner of a game receives 1 set of points (Loser's score/Winner's score*20), but I think there there should be an extra feature to this: Best of 3/5/7. This would mean:

Concise description:
  • You could play a best of 3 against someone. The player who wins 2 or 3 wins 1 set of points, instead of 3 sets being distributed.
  • Best of 3/5/7 is already widely used in Tournaments, and this would make that easier.
  • Best of 3/5/7 could be used in clanbattles as well. Just like above, the luck factor being reduced is the goal in these battles: you want to know who is the best.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • In tournaments there are often best of 3's, best of 5's, or even best of 7's. this is a great way of making sure that the best player/team is advancing to the next round. However, for people with a high score who don't want to lose points, this can be frustrating, because even if they win 5 out of 7, they lose points. I myself for instance can't play Tournaments if I want to stay in the top 10, and I know I am not the only one who cares about points.
  • The luck factor is the only factor that has the power to decide who wins besides strategy. With this suggestion, I hope we can reduce this factor, making skill more important in individual and teamgames.
  • This will allow for clanbattle results to be showing the skill balance. Due to the many games involved in clanbattles, the winner is usually the best team, but the results don't seem too convincing (most results are like 19-21, 14-16 etc.)
  • People will be less afraid of playing games against people with a lower score. This will give every cook the chance of playing against and learning from the real high players. Hell, I'll even play 1v1 Doodle Earth against a cook if it's best of 7

I like this idea a lot :D
Helps a bit to prevent losing big points to lucky dice streaks. Getting points would be kinda slower, but keeps your points more stable, I would play this more often than single games.

Yes, particularly for tournament organization, this is a great idea. Now...would this apply to only 1-vs-1 or would it be something that could be used with multiple players (other than two...heh).
...I prefer a man who will burn the flag and then wrap himself in the Constitution to a man who will burn the Constitution and then wrap himself in the flag.

I have thought about this as well, but couldn't find a way to introduce this for multiplayer games. They are a different kind of game, because of diplomatic and pychological elements :)
In a 3 player best of 5, would you let the guy who already won 2 games win again?

Nope, this will only be a 2 player/team feature.

True...but perhaps instead of making it "3 of 5", make it "first one to 3"...that way, the multiple-player games would be included and it wouldn't change the 1-vs-1 games at all.

okay so it's possible for multiplayer games as well.
still, it's more suitable for 1v1/teamgames, since in a 6 man first-one-to-3 game, everybody would be making sure the guy who already won 2.
also in an 8 man match, it could take 17 games before the final winner is decided, which is a little too much.

what do other people think about this?

another point of discussion would be how these best of 3/5/7 will happen.
in casual games you could make it that when game 1/3 is finished, game 2/3 automatically starts.
speedgames could take a lot of time though...
any thoughts?

Not if the tournament is designed for this (an idea which I love <grin>).

As well, this sort of thing is already in place in some tournaments. For instance, in the KING OF THE HILL tournament (currently ongoing), the first player to hold "the hill" (won the previous game and survived for a turn (or more) in the current game) for fifteen turns wins the match. As you say, beginning with the second game in the match, ALL of the other players are attacking THE KING to remove him as quickly as possible.

I like your idea about the automatic restart for the casual situation. I can't really think of a good way to get around that for the speed games either, and like you, I do see potential problems there.
