Verbal abuse - dock points

Postby hmsps on Tue Dec 30, 2008 9:38 am

Just a thought because there are a lot of people bringing up the subject of constant abuse etc and the moderators at best give a warning and tell us to foe the individual concerned.

Unfortunately this is just like UK law and the abusers get off as it were. Why doesn't CC make a rule that anyone found making abusive comments either in live chat or game chat etc dock the guilty individual points. Something to make it worthwhile like say 200.

I think this would mean there was a little more respect in games and give these people something to think about before launching into tirades of abuse which they know they can get away with because they are at the other end of a PC.

A good idea in theory, but in practice it would be a nightmare to enforce. Purely because what is deemed offensive is entirely subjective, the person who speaks could be joking, or not as the case may be. Besides if this were to be passed then we could expect to see a lot of Majors and Colonels drop rank all the way to Corporal , as personally amusing as that would be, I don't see the site staff implementing such a potentially labour intensive change.

CC takes a liberal stance on what can be said in the forums and in game chat. This is not a G rated site and one person may say something that others find crude or obnoxious. Unless the user is crossing the line of bigotry/racisim/homophobic language or is harassing one user in particular over an extended period, there is not much that the moderators can do. Putting the user on your Foe List may not seem like it does much, but if enough people do the same, then the abusive user will not have an audience and will eventually grow tired of talking to the walls.

i think its the liberal stance which is starting to annoy a lot of people and the people you will turn away from the site are the genuine players.

Again the bullies win the day.

"If a tree falls and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?"

Just foe them if they're going out of their way to annoy you, you'll be spared their monotinous garbage in future.

EDIT: typo fixed

Yeah I think the foe list is a good solution already. Imagine if a colonel drops to cook because of this new rule, it won't make him stop, it'll just make the person angry and their attitude will be worse.

I don't like this idea.

What would the points be worth then? Okay, the system is bad now, but under this, people with skill of generals could be cooks. The scoring system would lose the rest of the meaning it has.

Also more work for the mods. There is a foe list, and I use it regularly.

Actually reading the cheating and abuse reports i see that MAXASTUY has been banned for entering game chat with comments.

I have to question the moderators as to why the FOE comment was not made to the accusers soo his chat presumably would not be seen by them in the games.

It really does seem that CC has doubles standards. Everytime i get abuse within a game from now on I shall report it and do not expect to be given advice to FOE the person.

This was more of a "last straw" than a complete reason.

Bullies win or the pussies lose? Two ways to look at it. There's a foe list for a reason - if you're really that sensitive, as said, you shouldn't be on this site. You're basically a pro-censorship person, hoping to enforce your own morals on others, who's morals might not be the same. Which is exactly why you can use the foe button to ignore them.

Max's reason wasn't that he was necessarily bothering the people in the game. It was the fact he'd go to the games they were in, and tell the OTHER players to attack the player. And the players who had previously foed him would have no idea he was telling them to do so unless they unfoed him. It happened constantly - he was in games he shouldn't have been in. He was banned for also stirring up shit in the forums, and noob farming on top of that.

Common sense needs to be applied - it was an extreme case, and while I am neutral on the decision, I don't think it was a bad one, even if I wouldn't have done it myself.
