Suggestion: deadbeat deterrence

Postby gdeangel on Fri Sep 12, 2008 1:19 pm

Concise description: Send an email when it's a player turn if they've missed the prior two turns in the game, regardless of settings they select on the control panel.
  • Instead of saying "it's your turn", the email would say "you are about to be eliminated from the game if you don't take your turn

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • deter deadbeats possibly
  • get through to people who forget they have a game going

My gut feeling is that most deadbeats aren't logging in to the site. So wouldn't read the proposed PM ...

That's why an email was suggested ;)

Yes. The point is some people will change the control panel setting so they don't get bombed with emails for every turn. Then they make a game... they don't log in for a while... the game finally fills up... the person doesn't get a reminder cause they set the control panel not to send reminder emails for when it's their turn, and so they end up a deadbeat and getting kicked.

If you had two settings in the control panel:

1) Email me when it's my turn in a game - Y/N
2) Email me 24 hours before I am kicked out of a game for missing three consecutive turns - Y/N

that might just possibly improve things? Seems it would be a pretty easy thing to implement...

Apologies for my previous error in quoting 'email' as 'PM' - a significant difference.

Whilst I see what you mean I'm still not sure how many deadbeats are truly of the kind who simply forget rather than make a more active decision of "I can't be bothered to go back to that site".

Whilst it might be worth try something along these lines it would have to done in such a way that it benefited the potential deadbeat rather than merely for the convenience of those of us waiting.

I think this is win-win in most cases. I don't see how it really helps the other players a lot to get someone who is about to deadbeat in 24 hours and reduce the number of contenders by 1... maybe in a team game possibly. But one thing is that is might reduce the ability to pwn NOOBS who join an 8 player circus game that takes forever to start... i.e., they've nearly forgotten about the site by the time the game actually starts... it would simply be another change to get their attention again.
