Game assessement

Postby General K on Sun Jun 22, 2008 8:33 am

After playing more than 390 games, I decided to do an assessment on my CC experience and move forward.
So I would like to share my 1st year notes with the managers of this server:

overall the server is unique, it has it's nice side specially on the variation of maps and the nice creative themes in some tournaments.
the community is large and global, having the flags flashing near the names is a good insight and incentive.

I also like the ladder system, where a player can try to gain ranks game after game, as well as the feedback system that defines the quality of the player as seen by opponents.
The most games I liked to play are classic, sequential and escalating.

Now in my opinion the biggest flaw of all is the dice randomizer. and I am not saying that just to complain, this issue affected my play experience, made the games recently not enjoyable, thus I started to visit the site less than usual.
the good thing about the dice is that it shows you the exact rolls. the problem with it is that the defense rolls sometimes are ridiculously outstanding, to the extent that the games won were based on the fact that someone missed a kill. rarely I witnessed a game won out of Skill... it was only another player misery that makes it happen.

this made me realize that the game is not anymore about strategic planning nor about skills... it is about how lucky you are in not missing a kill, even if you had triple the required amount to make that kill happen.

from my discussion with the guys I got to understand that the dice is based on a random program. this sounds correct however:
recently this is the random scenario that I was experiencing and this is an example:
- 3 attacking dice gets 1 - 1 - 2 while the defense gets 1 - 2
- 3 attacking dice gets 3 - 5 - 6 while the defense gets 5 - 6
- 3 attacking dice gets 2 - 4 - 6 while the defense gets 4 - 6

the funny depressing part is when attacker gets a 6 - 6 - 6 and defense gets 6 - 6

random is correct, but what is incorrect is that the defense was given much much larger advantage than usual. you should not only randomize the rolls, but also the position of the rolls so that you don't end up having an army of 50 attacking vanishing in front of an army of 10. this is ridiculous and in the real board game it doesn't happen that much while in this server it's becoming a trend!

This is a game, but the game is supposed to entertain us, make us enjoy the experience, while personally I am being more and more unhappy as I miss kills because of an unreasonable dice.

Another bad note is the "join a game" function.
if the ladder system is made to define the best players vs the weakest, in my opinion this ladder should be based on individual skills and NOT team skills.
Most veterans are abusing the ladder system by accumulating points based on triple and double games that they host and play against.... n00bs.
when I first joined the server, like any new player the only logical button to hit was "join a game". the first games displayed are the triples hosted by the most experience players in CC! this doesn't make any sens, it is not fair and not welcoming at all!

My suggestion is to create a second ladder with medals dedicated for Team Play. that way the current ladder can be honoring the individual skills without any abuse.
and also make the individual games displayed as the main choice in the "join a game" page, while the "Team Games" can be added inside it so you end up having: "join public game", " speed game" etc... "join a Team Game".

I hope you take my notes into consideration, cause I have recently discovered other risk games which have their good part as well as bad part... but at least I don't get depressed by the amount of miss kills that I am witnessing in this sever.
I really like it here and hope improvements will happen, so at least I could reconsider renewing my subscription.

Thanks wacicha.

Dice
General K, looking at your comments on the dice first you may not be surprised to hear that this subject has been raised repeatedly and extensively in the past.

Note that Conquer Club do not simply state their dice are random and ask users to take this on trust ...
If you click "Help" in the main CC menu ... to get to the Conquer Club Frequently Asked Questions and look at the first question (Q17) under the heading "About Gameplay" you'll see "How do the dice work?"
Following the link there to http://www.random.org I have browsed through the article http://www.random.org/randomness/ which is helpful on why and how their numbers are truly random. Personally I find the evidence there (and elsewhere within the site as far as my maths allows me to understand it) enough to reassure me - beyond any frustrating experiences/strange observations of my own here at Conquer Club - that the numbers are truly random and our dice are truly random.
Their FAQ question 2.1 is kinda relevant :)
And 2.2 is interesting given how our own FAQ explains how CC uses the random.org numbers.

One of my own takes on why we perceive the dice way we do is in Can u believe this.
Twill's fairly technical assertion on why the dice must be random is in Petition to Change the Dice.
I'd suggest reading those and the conversation surrounding them.

Game Joining and Ladder suggestions.
General K, I think both these ideas have merit. If you search within this forum - Suggestions & Bug Reports- you'll find that there are a few suggestions that overlap to a greater or lesser extent with your thoughts. You could join in with one of those discussion or start your own using the official form. The recent Scoring Adhoc group discussed these areas in some depth although no decisions have yet been made, that I am aware of, on if or how to change the scoring system.
FREE M-E-Mbership and simple rules. Conquer Club - it's not complicated.

random me statistic @ 13 December 2008 - 1336 posts : 232nd most public posts (not counting Tower of Babble) of all time.
