Mini dictionary for chat

Concise description:
Work with international folks to create a very brief translation list of "friendly" terms to use in Chat ... "hello", "sorry, I have to leave now", etc.


Specifics:
This will improve the following aspects of the site:
Though English is the official language here, not everyone speaks it. Mostly, outside of teams, it doesn't matter. BUT it would be nice to be able to communicate a few basic things ... such as "can you play real time?" or "sorry, i have to go now".... etc.Google translations can lead to some big misunderstandings. I know you have space problems, but I think a brief "dictionary" of just a few terms could fit in without taking too much space. Nor do I believe finding translators will be very difficult. Where there aren't translators available, there probably are not many game players, either.



Three problems:

1. some jokers will offer obscene or just plain insulting "translations" .. but that should be easy enough to check.

2. A lot will ASK for the obscene ... just don't.



I ran a search on translation, dictionary, etc and found nothing ... but if I missed a relavant post, sorry

Anyone has the required basic internet and language skills - ie anyone who can use Conquer Club and Live Chat - can use the internet to check translations or etiquette. As you acknowledge whether people actually choose to use such resources is another matter.

I can't see any benefit in Conquer Club re-inventing this particular set of wheels.

we already have some.. gg, gl, probably more I've not seen.
Maybe the wheels have been invented elsewhere, but if so at least two of us aren't aware of at least some of them.
so - what common terms should we invent or what should we already know? I can usually work out an acronym when I first see it, but then English is my first language.
So the first time I saw IMHO rather than IMO, I immediately knew the H was for Humble.
If I saw JM2C I would quickly work out it was "Just My 2 Cents worth" - but would everyone?
Is there one for Want to Make a Deal? (WMD - oops, perhaps not that...)All Hit (player colour) AHR/AHB etc?

I always thought the H was for honest. It works both ways though.

In my opinion, I don't see a reason for this to be using the sites resources or the staff's time. If users want to take the initiative, it's not like anything bad can come from it, so it's worth a shot. But Lack and Co. have more important stuff to work on...IMHO.

These translations are very far from perfect, expecially with idioms. Something that sounds quite polite in one language can end up being very rude when translated via Google, speaking as someone who HAS had experience with it.

Just to give one MILD example, in many languages it is quite appropriate to tell your grandmother or your father's boss "I just cut a fart" or "I have to go piss".... but not in English. Start getting into things that are technically slang, but used so often we forget this, particularly polite phrases, and you can really end up angering someone when you are really trying to be polite. That is why I think we could use a real dictionary -- for those of use who care, anyway.

and, get into those abbreviations and many of us who were not teethed upon the internet don't always get it. It took me quite a while to recognize "good game" as such (and not "good goog" or "gotta go", etc.)

As for Lack being busy, you are correct, but I think this is something that can be readily assigned to someone without heavy programming skills. All it really needs is the space and typing, unless you want it REALLY fancy. For now, all I am suggesting is a simple list or chart of basic translations, maybe 20 terms in all, with more added as is desired. AND, it would have to involve a lot of folks in different languages.

One beginning step might be for each of the those with language forum sections to post brief dictionaries within their own forums. From there, it could be combined and expanded .. just a thought. The approach will depend on who does it.

Don't get me wrong. There is an interesting discussion to be had regarding semantics, abbreviations, cross-cultural differences and the translations of these ... but it's dead as a Conquer Club suggestion and hence has no place in this forum.

By all means start a new topic in Chatter Box and take the discussion further there ...

Does that sound reasonable ?
