Improved RSS Feeds & Optional Alerts

Postby edthemaster on Sat Feb 03, 2007 1:52 am

1. To help players (especially newbies) monitor the status of their games, know when it's their turn, receive chat messages from teammates, etc; how about an optional 'alert client' that runs (as a service/process) on the players PC--with optional desktop alerts, sound notification, email alerts, etc.?

2. In addition, for Google Desktop users like me, consider a Google Gadget for the sidebar that does this using RSS feeds? (Google provides a nice little SDK that makes this relatively easy) This might also increase traffic to your site from other Google Desktop users.

3. Also, I think that having more detailed information in the <description> tag of the RSS feeds would help. Things like:

* Map name
* Who's currently playing, or next up
* Who's still in the game / eliminated players
* # of Territories owned (and +/- change since last turn)
* maybe even the Game Chat messages?

I think these relatively minor improvements (in terms of work involved) would significantly improve user awareness, speed the games up a little, and give the game a more interactive, inclusive feel--because right now, it has a kind of 'distant' feel (just my honest, objective opinion as a newbie). Don't get me wrong, I love playing, and I think you guys have done a fantastic job; but there's always room for improvement, right?

Priority: 4
I think it would greatly help to attract/retain new players, and make the experience even better for the veterans.

Whaddaya think??

Welcome to CC!

If you're not aware of the thread

Is a good place to find some excellent utilities, Fantius's desktop app is very good and sits in the tray letting you know when new games are ready. ConquerTell is also excellent, allowing you to go directly to games when ready.

As you are new to the site you probably haven't come across Troy's script - absolute must for giving a breakdown of the board position and players cards.

To the actual suggestion:

I would like to see some RSS improvements, for me timeleft to turn is a real biggie - as a non premium member 4 games this is probably not key but if/when you become one managing anything up to 40 or more games can be a nightmare in this respect.

The others could be interesting - probably most interest would be the chat side of things. So yes high priority on time left and i'd go for the priority you chose for the others

Thanks, Tals--that board-breakdown/game statistic script is priceless...

So, can random users create software for the game? I assume there is some verification process to make sure it's not malignant?

If that's the case, maybe I'll write/post the Google Gadget myself... Are there any rules to follow for posting software?

I wanted to add my voice of support for edthemaster's suggestions for improvement in the RSS Feed.

Improving the RSS feed with things like the map name and who's turn it currently is, can greatly improve the notifiers out there that many players depend on to view a quick list of their games.

Knowing the map name would help clarify which game is what without having to remember the unique game number for each game. When you have 12-15 games going, it gets difficult to know which game is what.

In addition, knowing which player's turn it is in the RSS feed would allow you to see how close it is to your turn or see that the game is progressing.

Thanks for considering the idea!

RSS for speed games

Postby Merrijk on Sun Feb 17, 2008 10:43 am

Currently the rss does not update frequently enough to be useful for speed games.

If i am playing a 6 person sequential game, my next turn can be 5 minutes away or 25 minutes away. And using the rss with a notifier would help alot. But since the rss only updates every 5 minutes or so, it may almost miss my turn entirely, or tell me im ready when ive already burned 4 minutes.

Is there a solution to this problem that i dont know of?

how about an RSS feed for an individual game that is generated when the rss is requested? (rather than batch generating rss files on a scehdule, like it currently does.)
