[Sug] Country info wait for games and/or more ignore options

Postby terrafutan on Mon Feb 04, 2008 8:47 am

Can we maybe get the little flag next to our names in our profile added to the awaiting games list the same as the rank picture ?

This way I know I will be playing against people with similar time zones.

Alternatively can we get an option to ignore whole countries in our ignore list and I can then filter it that way if I wanted to.

Thanks

Why?
It sounds like you believe that folks in certain time zones will only play at specific times, perhaps because you don't like drawn out games.

There are 3 issues. First, this assumption is just is not true.

I, for one, play at all hours because I am kept up all hours with an infant and this is something I can do while holding him. Other people might work at night or work irregular shifts. I play people from all over the world AT all hours. The country is not a reflection of the time a person will play at all.

Secondly, there already is an option for folks who want to play quick games. They are called speed games. If you want them, PLAY them, don't try to change a casual game into something other than it is. A suggestion has been made for longer speed games -- look up the thread for the discussion.

The other reason I almost hate to mention, but is prejudice. That is a moral stance Lack has stated repeatedly is not and will not be supported herein. Begin with the fact that someone has a server in a particular area is not even indication they necessarily are of that nationality and ending with .. well, if you want to be prejudiced, no one can prevent you, but don't expect help.

You reading a lot into a 5 line post.

I have nothing against drawn out games. Currently in a game that started on the 4th Dec 07 and it doesn't look like it will end anytime soon.

1st - Agreed there are some people that play at all hours of the day. I am one of them, but I think that we are in the minority. Everyone has to sleep sometime and it would be easier knowing that your opponents will probably be asleep the same time as you, especially in freestyle games.

2nd - This has absolutely nothing to do with the speed of the game. I'm currently playing a 24hr freestyle. I play and wait and eventually go to sleep. I wake up and the other 3 players have all played twice, since they are awake in their timezone. I play again and the process repeats itself until I am getting hammered by the double turns which I think is due to my time zone. Yes I can stop playing freestyle, but I enjoy it.

3rd - Can't quite fathom what this is about other than you calling me a bigot. Surely it's my prerogative if I don't want to play with anyone from say Australia because I don't like their cricket team or some such stupidity. To effect that currently I have to search the user list and find all the people from Australia and manually put them on my ignore list. Seems it could be easier to just code an extra option onto the ignore list functionality. If that makes people think you're bigoted, then so be it.

How would you eradicate the problem I face in either 2 or 3 ?

if i had a penny for every time i played an American id be a millionaire. If i had $1000 for every time I was frustrated due to the different time zones id be BANKRUPT!

my answer to the OP: if you dont want to play us Aussies coz you get your arse kicked i would suggest that you click on join a game and right click on ppls names and look in their profiles if it bothers you.
a poor workman always blames his tools... SO STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE DICE FFS

All those people who whinge about losing points to low rankers need to read a book entitled "Losing 40 Points V The End of the World : A Study in Contrast"

So you are never frustrated by the timezones ?

I could do as you suggest. How long I wonder would it take me to actually join a game then if I have to check every time. I can't see much of a coding issue to add the flags next to a persons name exactly like his rank is displayed.

My Aussies reference was an example actually. I don't think you blokes down under beat me all that often since you take longer to play - all that sheep shagging must tire you out.

nope i am never frustrated by timezones. im all for coding in flags to appear next to someones name but i DONT support the auto ignore you were obviously putting forwards.

oh and by the way... its not Aussies that shag sheep thats our next foor neighbour New Zealand.

why should the mere fact that it may take an Aussie to play a LITTLE longer to play make them lose????
