You have 8? positions in there - this will essentially ensure an even distribution of them - note if you have players less than 8 - then the unassigned starting positions will be distributed randomly...

That was all - just mix up Europe. There was concern early on that Europe was too powerful and that no one player should be able to quickly monopolize the continent thanks to a lucky drop. Plus, this way you might see players trying to hold their European nation while scrambling to collect their Empire bonus, which would be fun.

There are still a few European territories that aren't starts so somebody could get a decent drop there, but it won't be overwhelming.

quiet week in this thread, so I've started the coordinates... still a lot to fix, but it helped sort out all of the bombardments and connections in the code.

I guess I could next sort out how the small map is going to come together.... hmm...

Have the new gameplay issues been sorted out oaktown? Or should I get this one into a position for stamping?
What do you know about map making, bitch?

There are no other gameplay items that we're discussing at the moment... adding the Italian empire was the last significant change. Of course, like any map we could let it sit another month and I have no doubt that somebody will come up with some new bright idea! ;)

Good call - I've been so focused on gameplay and mountains, I never really paid any attention to the legend. But as there are a lot of regions, I think it needs to remain somewhat clean and straightforward.

Can't you try something about the colours to help players reading the continent legend.
And at least you should invert first and second line so Oceania stays under Japan.
De gueules à la tour d'argent ouverte, crénelée de trois pièces, sommée d'un donjon ajouré, crénelé de deux pièces
Gules an open tower silver, crenellated three parts, topped by a apertured turret, crenellated two parts

When in doubt, err on the side of clean and functional. Old border restored, legend rearranged and grouped into one clean box.

frame is fine but you still should at least you should invert first and second line of continent legend so Oceania stays under Japan.

Agree with this - except for Europe - all of those continents are on the bottom line...

Unless you have

Europe - Russia - Japan

ME - Chinese - SA - Oceania

You should at least color code the bonuses to make them easier to read.

Also, Southern Asian and Russian empire colors are almost exactly the same, and they are only separated by some mountains. I don't think they should be that similar

This has been tried, and it looked like mud.

Really? My color vision isn't the same as everybody else's, but they look quite distinct to me. I can drive Russia a bit darker/redder.

As for the arrangement of the region names in the legend, I would be happy to oblige any requests for changes. They currently are set up in the manner that they best fit - switching the names around as suggested means having one line much longer than the others, which will require either giving the legend more space or making the type smaller. Simply swapping the first and second lines would make much more sense, unless folks are concerned that users will think that Europe is called Russia and the Middle East is called Russia.

If you can make it match nicely do it - otherwise - just swap the 2 around?

My option above attempted to balance them slightly - but can see that it might not work so well.

My thoughts exactly. This is an incredible map, though =D> . I would make the African bonuses' outlines more apparent.

Or stamp it whatever!

the italian bonus changes hardly anything, since only two territories are the subject of potential italian ship bombardments and one of these was already capable of being attacked by italy.

there might be a fair few 1v1 games decided by the +2 bonuses for the italian, dutch and portuguese empires (a 10% chance of player 1 receiving one of these from the drop). a possible reduction to +1 is in order.

oaktown wrote:
iancanton wrote:the oceania bonus looks too high compared with the others... reducing the bonus to +3 will balance things out (+2 might be overdoing it).

On this I disagree... keep in mind that both Sumatra and Java can be whacked by the sea power territory - two borders which will have to be defended, yet from which you can never advance. I think that a seven territory region with 4 spots to defend is well worthy of a +4.

oceania doesn't have 4 territories to defend: i can see only 3 (sumatra, philippine islands and java), one of which can be only bombarded and not invaded. in contrast, classic africa has 3 border territories and an unfavourable location in the middle, but a bonus of only +3. i know which one i'd rather try to hold!

although i continue to push for the oceania bonus to be lowered to +3, the gameplay stamp is still valid.

Although if because of the naval bombardment oceana is 4 then why is the horn of africa just 1 if all of the territories can be either attacked or bombarded?

the bonus discussions continue I see...

• Horn of Africa: when we added the Italian bonus, all Horn territories became vulnerable. +2 would seem to be in order, yes?

• Oceania: I was wrong when I said that there were four vulnerable territories; there are 3. I double counted Sumatra. Right now it is an 8 terit, 2/3 border +4, on a map with a 7 terit, 4 border +5 (China). To me that seems somewhat fair, but I'm open to continued discussion on this because I'd like to be sure we're getting it right.

• Getting a 3-terit region on the drop: yes, it could happen, especially in two/three player games. But in a two/three player game you're going to start with 23 territories and 7 seven drop already, so another 2 armies shouldn't upset the balance too much. I would say that lowering the value to +1 would make those regions a waste of effort in a small game - why go after a +1 when you've got the armies to go after something bigger? Anyway, if you're playing a big map like this (or World 2.1) with just one opponent you're asking for trouble from the start anyway.

Other than the mountains, there have been no more graphics concerns?
