Country Color Changing Into Owner's Color

Hey all...

Wouldn't it be lovely to have the territories change their color into the color of the one who conquers it?

I've only been playing for a little while now, but i had 3 cases of people mistaking one color for another (or claiming so).
I know that's why there is the option to put those awful colorcodes in front of the number of troops, but it would make it much easier to see who is where on the map. And cooler to see the size of your empire.
Continents would be indicated by the color of the borders.

I've looked a little on the forum, and didn't find any topic related to this... which i think is kinda strange, since this was my first thought when I joined CC and saw that the countries didn't change color.

Bad idea, and infeasible as well.

First of all, this would make all our maps really ugly. We mapmakers spend months creating awesome graphics for the maps you play, and you'd want to shit all over them and make them look like patchwork quilts? No thanks.

Second, there's no practical way to implement this.

Well, in my opinion, if I am red, and the map turns red, it ain't ugly...
True, some maps would have some downgrade on graphs, but most maps don't have a lot of graphics inside a country, just a color showing which continent it belongs to.
And some programming work should have to be done, but that doesn't make it impossible.

You haven't played a lot of CC maps, have you.

I think it would be kind of cool, maybe like as an add on or something. How it would be implemented... I dunno. How it would look over the existing graphics... I don't know that either.

The entire "region" on the map changing colors, No. As it is part of an image that the mapmakers create, however the only thing close to this that is feasible, is having the army circles tint to a certain color. However I don't like that either.

This couldn't work. If every territory is the color of the player sitting on it how will people know where the bonuses are?

The borders of a region remain the color of the continent...
Has anyone here ever played Risk (pc version) or Conquest or any game like that?
It's perfectly possible.

People draw the maps, and then before the launch of the map someone (who knows how) integrates the colorchanging...

True, but I've checked them all out though...
"Special graphics" like trees and hills and whatnot don't have to change colors...
You could use layers, the colorchanging stuff as the background and other stuff as the front layer.
Or the designers draw the map 8 times, so every country has a version of the possible colors, and so they could decide on what graphics to change and what not.

Again: this is perfectly possible, it only requires some more programming on each map.
And for the hardcore-"I don't want color changing territories"-people, there could be an option to switch it on and off.

This would take *a lot* of programming, *a lot* of debugging, *a lot* of extra work on the part of every potential mapmaker, and every former mapmaker if it's to be implemented, and all for a feature that doesn't really extend gameplay or improve clarity all that much.

Sure it's "possible" but it's practically infeasible.

Firstly, it would require way too much effort from the mapmakers.

Secondly, the game engine would have to host 10x more images, increasing the server load, making all your games much slower.

Thirdly... the boundaries of the territories are not recognized by the game engine. The mapmaker would need to create an alpha mask for each territory, and that would again increase the required space to ridiculous amounts...

Fourthly: maps with special gameplay would not be able to use this at all. Look at maps like monsters, or research & conquer, where the territories are very unorthodox in shape or very small - there's nowhere to put the colours on maps like those.

This will never be implemented, simple as that. Sorry if it decreases your enjoyment of the site.

LOL no worries, I enjoy it quite a lot...
I just have to look twice sometimes to see the difference between green and gray...
Guess you're right...

I'm wondering if there could be an add-on that has something like the clickable maps markers colored according to ownership - that'd be the only way I'd think it'd be feasible.

I've messed up a few times getting to learn it, but now I find them very handy indeed. Especially so during deployment, where I don't have to scroll around to find the name on the dropdown.

BOB has a feature which allows you to hover your mouse over the player list and have the territories held by that player highlighted with icons which actually indicate which territories border enemy territories and which are surrounded by friendlies and neutrals. Also, hovering over the "Team 3" line, for example, shows the territories of all members of Team 3 in the same fashion.

Above the default stats box is an option called color codes. It will put a letter in front of the number to tell you what color it belongs to. If you are green, you get a g and if you are grey you get an s (for silver, i presume). If that clutters you too much, most internet browsers that are capable of running java are also capable of zooming in. Before I got BOB I used that a LOT on the Montreal map.
