it depends on the staage your map is in.
i generally like to start the thread when the map is already very developed so i can safely say most of the work is done even before the map is made public. in that stage i work depending on free time and inspiration. if i have the idea properly thought out in my head and i'm in a creative mood i can create a fresh map in a matter of hours. if not i can tinker on it for weeks until i get something to post.
after the thread is started it depends on the feedback i get and the free time i have. sometimes i've put 4-5 updates in a matter of hours from the start of the thread, sometimes it takes 1-2 weeks before i put another update.
in my opinion it would be perfect to put an update as soon as somebody makes a comment. if you have the free time to do this then the process runs smoothly. take AoR: Magic for example, it took only 15 days to get quenched. yes it was part 2 of a trilogy and it had a good starting image but i also made it in a period when i had a lot of free time and managed to churn out a lot of updates and got a lot of feedback.
