Yeah, how random are the examples? I know it's hard to forecast all possibilities but looking at the 2-player drop: green only needs to take a lone neutral (which he can attack from two points) to bag Hokkaido and red isn't facing down any of his borders. If green is up first it could be game over ...

You're right about the gameplay, I had noticed that too. Regards the name, I agree it is too big. Perhaps lose the ships and reposition the name bottom right in a smaller size.
I think the flag looks fine, and considering it is still in use by the Japanese Self Defense navy, I don't see how it could cause offence. I'd be more concerned about the bushido quote and the hanging lantern which seem to clutter the map unnecessarily.
I know it's been tried several times before, but can't someone please revive plans to produce a Japan map. I have a few ideas of my own, but I have never been involved with designing a map and wouldn't know where to start. Any takers?
